Hello Fellow Shooters and Hunters.I bought a .357 magnum SW 4inch barrel yesterday. Im really excited about having it on my hip when I go afield. One thing I don't know is that, Im not sure really how much I can "put down" with this gun. I spent some time shooting a 9 mm in the Marine Corps, but that was an ol beat up hand gun. The hand gun that I purchased yesterday is beautiful. Everything seems to be in perfect condition. Know I just need to know what power I have with it. Any information would be greatly apprieciated!ThanksRyan Woody

Ryan,I can tell you that an S&W 586 8 3/8" .357 Mag will reliably knock down a Ram silhouette target at 200 meters. That target is 55 lbs of 3/8" steel plate. Course that don't mean beans when it comes to deer or hog hunting. If you plan to hunt with that pistol get a lot of practice. :DGary

Congrate:I love the .357 Mag.Lets see: With the right ammo = Coyotes, Pig and DeerI would keep all shots under 50 yds.Oh' Ya': good home defense as well.Where is the Pic of the new gun ?

Ryan Woody,I left out the part about using the 180 gr Sierra for some of my handloads. Oh, and the part about the 173 gr & 214 gr cast bullets with a compressed charge of WW 680 powder. Other than that everything was off-the-shelf. A17Shooter

i have hunted with my 357MAG i got my 2x3 deer with it last yr i shot it at 75yr and it ran about 5 feet.....i naw have a 44mag and 357mag in the marlin...

Gentleman, Okay I went and shot my .357 mag. I had a great time. except for one big mistake. Here it is. I work as a security agent at a middle school in Indio Ca. On St. Patricks day the students had a St Patty's day carnival at the school. Well since Im a security agent, and all I do is deal disciplinary actions with the students. The students thought that they would get their revenge on me and put me in the Dunk Tank. So I did it. (Trying to make better relationships with the students). Anyhow shortly after I left the school, my next stop was to go home and get my .357 and change into dry clothing. I went to the field set up and fired. Took my first well placed shot. BOOM!.. My eardrums exploded.. I violated my inner ear causings both eardrums to rupture. Now I can't here very good. The Nurse said it would take about 5 weeks to heal. Over all it sucks. Lesson #1 Learned: Never rush afield and forget your earplugsLesson #2 Learned: If you forget lesson one. Make sure you don't have water in your ears, because it only amplify's the sound.Thanks,Ryan Woody

When I got my Concealed Weapon permit years ago they didn't make us wear hearing protection. Some of the people that were allowed to get permits back then also thought they carry .44 Magnums. I know it's stupid but I actually saw two different people drop their guns the first time they fired them. Who would come to a class and bring a gun they had never even fired. Needless to say not everyone passed the class.Ryan, I hope your hearing is okay and the condition is not permanent. Always guard your hearing it's to valuable to loose.

Hi everyone first time posting here/ As far as forgetting ear protetion out in the field i found that if you put a 357/38 shell invered primer first into the ear, you would be surprised how much that helps. As for the stopping power of the 357 you would be happy to hear ive thaken countless hogs abought 50/60 during my time as a hunting guide using a 6in 38spc. Ive also taken a bunch of em with the 357.Ive used a 7&1/2 black hawk with a 2x scope i scored the longest shot ive ever done with a hand gun i shot it on the run at 250 yards right thru bouth lungs it went abought 10 yards and fell,lucky shot i know. Ive also used a grizzly win mag in 357 with a great amount of succes. I used these mostly because most every one says that it cant be done. With that said you got to know that shot placement is very very important the differnce in thinking that you just made a good shot and knowing you just killed that pig and it just hasnt fallen over yet is what it takes. so pratice as offten as possible and when you think your ready let me know i can set you up with a bunch of different types of hunting ranches and iam starting to check out more BLM areas starting this week one of my friends gust got back from paso robles area him and his buds got ten of them with out paying a red cent ..... happy hunting

UPDATE:I went to my family doctor about 3 weeks ago, he told me that I had bad ear infections in both ear and he gave me medicine to take care of it. He told me to come back in a week, if I still had ringing. Week later was back at the doctors, Good new Ear infections are gone, Bad news I had to go see an Ear Specialist. One week later, Ear Specialist calls me to set up appointment. The following day I have a Ear exam done. Results (BAD)!Okay I am a 26 yr. old man, Hard Working, Coach for baseball, Dad of two, etc. I HAVE TO GET HEARING AIDS IN BOTH EARS!, and the doctor is not sure if the ringing will ever go away. I think her exact words were like "It should of had stopped by now, its been a month. Hopefully it will when you get your Hearing aids".I was so depressed, Good news about this whole dang gone thing is, I did most of the Damage in the Marine Corps. This last incident was what broke the Camel's back. I have been told before, that since I'm a Retired Disabled Veteran, and all I did in the Marine Corps was deal with Machine Guns, that it would probably not be hard to get disability for my hearing loss. So thats what I've been up too. Now I'm fighting a battle to try and get hearing aids for my hearing loss threw the VA. For those of you that don't know. This is a pretty rough battle to fight. (actually its just long).Anyhow Thanks for letting me share my UPDATE,Ryan Woody

Ryan,Did you have any hearing tests that showed a decrease in your hearing while you were active?

I had a couple of hearing tests done while I was in the Marines. So (Yes) would be my final answer. LOL Im not sure what exactly the results were, but I knew at that time, that the test indicated that my hearing did start to decrease.Ryan
