I am considering painting up a variable scope with an AO and wanted to ask if there were any tricks to a quality job. Painters tape and exacto knife?

Hey Heath,Best tip. . . Don't paint the glass part. 
All joking aside, Lil Shooter(my daughter), paints the scope with the gun. That way the patterns match. We cut stencils from thin plastic like the cover of binders. They hold up better with the wet paint as you begin to spray. And remember to spray the whole scope with your primer and base color first, before using stenciled colors.Mask off any part - bolt, safety opening, trigger and opening, etc. She puts a small piece of cotton down the barrel also.db

I just use the blue tape and an exacto where needed. Also, painting the scope with the rifle is recommended if you can. I have gotten lazier though. I used to really spend a lot of time around the #'s and the glass. Now I just make sure the glass is covered as well as the #'s. If it ends up a little crooked or sloppy it's no big deal to me (Not counting the glass). After all, the point is to have a dull finish that blends with your surroundings. I'm definitely not doing this for resale, so I care a bit less if it looks COOL or not, I just don't want it stand out in the Desert.

I always paint mine with the scope mounted. I have found a couple coats of a nice clear coat really helps the rifle blend into the surroundings and definitely won't spook any incoming critters; here's a couple examples of a rifle blending in...
