this is my first post. I came upon coyote hunting on the internet and with a sizable coyote population in my area kind of eased into it. I bought some cheap woods wise screamin' three call from cabelas. Ive called in a few and shot one that I was unfourtunately unable to recover. I shoot a ruger 10/22 22lr not because i believe it is an ideal caliber but it is all i have from squirrel and rabbit. Just curious as to a couple of better, though still value minded call(s) and bullet placement with the limited 22lr. much thanks for any help or tips.

Welcome to the forums! With your limits for your shooting caliber I would suggest you take only head shots; any thing else and you may not get a quick kill resulting in the animal suffering. As for a recommended call, there are dozens of good ones on the market today. Although, I like the calls that this guy makes. THO Game Calls He is actually sold out right now, but keep checking back and he will have it restocked. You can get a custom made hand call shipped to you for less than $20. Read some of the feedback he is getting for his calls.

You will find that coyotes are remarkably tough. Often times after being shot, they don't know they're dead until they've scrambled off into the brush or out of sight. We've all lost coyotes, but using a 22lr is not the best idea if you want to recover them. If that's all you have, then I'd say head (brain) shots only. That probably means 50 yards is your max distance even with a scope. Practice shooting golf ball sized targets from field positions and you'll get the idea how difficult it is.

thanks so much. I will shoot head shots then. It shouldn't be that difficult. I used to shoot open sight .22 in competion at 25yds. regardless i will spend more time on targets.

lvr, welcome to the forum. A larger caliber would be helpful but you use what you have. Good luck.

Exactly. Even a deer rifle would work.

Welcome to the forum. This is a great bunch of guys, willing to give you all sorts of information. And in fact, most of it is even reasonably good. ;) Just ask lots of questions and learn and learn. What part of the country are you located? We have members all up and down Calif, and even a few from out of state.

Me too. In fact, I used to shoot open sight .22lr in competition at 25 meters and 50 meters with my weak hand, and I even managed to win a few medals at state and nationals. ;) Having said that, I personally would probably not attempt a head shot with a 22lr unless it was a target of opportunity. Sure it can be done, but you're going to wound/maim more often than kill, if you can even get them to come that close. 2001 Collegiate National ChampionshipsPosted Image
