My buddy filled his turkey tag with a really nice tom. After hearing lots of gobbling from at least 5 different birds, and one loud mouthed hen, the birds finally fly down. Unfortunately, the closest one went away from us. A bit dismayed, I decided to give some yelps on a box call. Gobble, and close. So give some purrs and clucks. Then I look up the trail, and I see tail feathers. Then I see the white cap on the toms head. He's coming in full stut, spitting and drumming. My bud doesn't have a clear shot. Then a hen comes up behind us. She's about 10 yds from my bud when she busts him trying to keep a bead on the tom. As soon as she turns to run, I hear BOOM! A 3" load of #5 shot dropped that tom. Let the celebration begin!

A quick look at the beard and spurs and I knew we had a nice bird. After getting back to the truck, we measured. Final measurements were a 9 1/2 beard and 3/4" spurs. My buddy is going to roost the birds again tonight. Tomorrow, it's my turn.

Proud Hunter!
