After fighting with my light weight bench out in the desert trying to get some range work done I decided I'd try and research these tripod style benches a little bit. Have any of you used them? What is your honest opinion of them? Who all makes them? The one in the picture below is from Coyote Jakes and is (cough) $400.

Woodog has one. Not sure if it's the same one, but it looked similar. It is heavy as hell, but nice. Very steady. He added some quick release pins to his setup. I think he paid around that for his.Mine are simple home made jobs that cost me less than $40 to build. One is a Booger Bench the other I used a Sawhorse foldup workbench from Harbor Freight. Both work good enough for me. :)I think his was similar to this one. Caldwell

That's the one I have. Looks like it has come down in price a bit (story of my life). It works well, but is heavy, awkward to handle and is a finger pincher if you are not careful. The legs fold up, the top folds down and the seat also folds so it can be stored or transported fairly flat, but you have to wrestle with it. I find it easier to handle by just removing the legs and seat with quick disconnect fasteners. It holds a LeadSled with two bags of shot with no problems. What I like best about it is that swivels 360 degrees using just a little leg pressure. I've got one of the VarmintMasters pivot benches. It is a very sturdy but heavy bench. Mine is the Alum. one but they make it in steel also which must be really heavy. It's a good portable bench.

Forgot to say, it doesn't have the original top on it. It wasn't big enough and it was for left or right and we shoot right handed. Can't leave well enough alone. So now it has a bigger top geared to right handed shooting. It works great.

I bought the metal kit and built my own top. The seat is a boat seat from Wal-Mart. The only problem is you have to make sure that you are sitting over one of the legs before you lean back or it will dump you on your head. (Don't ask how I know.)I also went on line and found a good heavy duty duffle bag to store it in. The accessory prices at Coyote Jakes are out of sight.Other than that, it has worked out great.

It's legal as long as it is not attached to a vehicle or shooting from a road.

what about trailer does that count as a vehicle because I have seen pics of those trailer all ready for a vermin hunt

In CA if it is attached to a vehicle it's a big no-no. If you detach the trailer then you're golden. I am not sure how stable a trailer would be to shoot from unless you had leveling jacks on each corner to get the wheels off the ground.

Hey Cranky did you ever pick one of these up?I recently built a bench with Folding Table Legs, but it's not as sturdy as my old Workmate bench I built.One of these days I will have to spring for the good stuff.

I'd wait until you move back home. Those things are heavy and bulky to move.

I know you will probably have a bunch of stuff in your rig already on Saturday, but if you have the room, maybe you can bring yours? I'm sure the guys would like to see how nice they are (and how heavy).I'll give ya a hand setting it up.

Man, that first one is cool! I especially like the shade cover. Supposed to be 103 this weekend.

It would be kinda pricey but its all about what you want to spend you money on I bet they spent around 2k or 3k

I use the one made by RCBS the best part is you can swing and move up and down. It not going to be as solid as a bench but I can hold one inch groups at 100 yards with it most of the time

there is a guy at the fresno gun show that is always there that builds and sells them. dont remember the price, but they were well built and reasonably priced.

I purchased this one from Cabelas Inventive Technology 360° .It was $250. Very stable. We consistently shoot squirrels to 450 yards off this bench. Even stable in high winds.Go luck with your purchase.

I also use the RCBS shooting bench. it does not have a table top but your rifle sits securely in a cradle that swivels 360 degrees plus it has 20 degrees upwards and 20 degrees downward movement. RCBS shooting bench
