It has finally arrived! Spring turkey opened today here in WA. Got to the place where my buddy and I were meeting, and it started snowing. Will it ever end? Fortunately, it wasn't snowing up where we were heading. So we get to the gate where I park, and no sooner as we get out of the truck, we hear gobbles. Excellent! We get all set up, the decoys are out and looking there spring best and I start calling softly. A distant gobble. I call again, nothing for a bit. I switch to a mouth call. Gobble. Another yelp. A closer gobble. I look at my buddy, and he point to the bottom of a hill about a hundred yards away. So I look, and sure enough there is a turkey making it's way over but all I can see is the top of his head since there was a slight depression in the ground. The head was red, so far so good. He comes up the dip and I am straining to see the beard. He finally turned to where I could see at about 20 yds. The "beard" was more like a five o clock shadow, MAYBE an inch. I have him in my sights and my buddy is wondering why I haven't shot yet. He comes to within 15 yds and senses something is up and walks away. I just couldn't pull the trigger on him. Way to young and I didn't want to end my hunt 45 minutes into opening day for that. That jake had no idea how close he came. That was the only turkey we saw all day. Think that decision was on my mind a bit? We did hear alot more gobbling throughout the day. Found a great place to start tomorrow off and another to try after that. We also had a bit of a snow squall roll through while working a bird. That shut him up and we never heard him again. Great day out. Can't wait for tomorrow.
