Nobody has what we use to call a California rig? Many of you probably don't know what they are. It was a truck set up to light from ( legal in some areas in California ) Maybe the law has changed? If not, then there has to be somebody out there with one.

Yup, I've got one. It's illegal to hunt out of the hatch in Kaliforniastan but when we're in Nevada we can roll, light and shoot from the hatch. Here in Kaliforniastan, we can still light from the hatch and that lets us pick up the incoming traffic and then join the shooter on the ground for the final closing of the deal. My rig is a 1981 Full-sized Jeep Cherokee. All it does is hunt and it's been rebuilt to do the job well. I don't even want to admit how much $$$ I have in my little buggy but it is a terror off-road and has never ceased to amaze me with respect to how it goes through, over and around everything. Ca Desert Dog, I've seen your rig going east on 15 more then once, real nice looking rig too. You've probably seen one or two of mine heading on down the road before. Heck, I've owned 9 of them over the years. I'm living in Nevada now and yes I still got one lol. Got to be some more out there besides just us two?

Yup. I would think so onecoyote. I know of at least a half-dozen others in my club. Mine is not a daily driver though. I save her for the hunts and keep her ready to roll at a moment's notice.

nice Cherokee! Mine is a 2000 4-door Sport and it is amazing how good these are off-road.You said on your webpage, you use Krylon for your guns. Did you use Krylon Rattle cans on your Jeep? I have been thinking of Camo-ing mine. Mine is my daily driver, so I have held off Camo-ing due to scaring the people I work with. :)Couple more ??sWhere do you keep your spare?Mine is too big to fit in the back (unless I want it to take up the whole cargo area almost and stink up the rig like rubber).What kind of roof rack is that?I would like to put my spare on the roof, possibly in a rack like yours.

Wannakillacoyote....It's a custom roof rack, kinda. Ca Desert Dog, I'll bet I see some Ca rigs this fall in Nevada, probably even be some people I know riding in them? lol.

This is too funny. About six years ago I painted my rig and used 25 cans of Krylon spray paint. That stuff is incredible. It still looks pretty good but perhaps I'll break down and repaint the old girl this summer. This time I am going to lay on a bunch of desert tan paint using my HVLP gun and get a good base coat on it. Also, the bumpers and everything else, including the wheels will be painted. Then I'll do the camo highlights with Krylon. It had the chrome rims on it when I bought it. I am going to get some "moon disk" hubcaps and camo them to match the rest of the truck when I repaint. I've been trying to get some govt. surplus desert tan paint but no luck so far. My spare is stored up under the rear of the vehicle. It has always been there. My roof rack is made from lightweight, plastic drainage pipe and cost me all of about 20 bucks, if that. It works great and clamps right on to the stock roof rack with large hose clamps. I used calking compound to make it rattle proof and as I said, it has served me well.I cut the hatch in and made the hatch and frame from oak, marine plywood and marine epoxy. I am comfortable working with wood and epoxy and it has never leaked a drop. She's a good old gal and although she's no freeway speed demon, off-road she is a dream.

Krylon is some amazing stuff!! Did you put any kind of clearcoat after the krylon, or just do straight Krylon?I only saw a couple pics of it on your website, do you have any detailed pics of the hatch area and your roof rack?

mine is an 89 samuri,convertibe top.3.79 per gallon still hurts the pocket book but sammi makes up for it.

I'm thinking of painting mine over again in FDE. I've been working on it SLOWLY over the last 4 years or so. I still need big lights on it, but I'm at the point now that I want something with a gas engine so I can get more than 10-15 miles out of a charge.

Ca Desert Dog, the rig I have now is set up for day hunting in New Mexico, but it well sure work in Nevada too. Dark gray 06 4x4 Dodge pick up with a black camper shell, a 38x40 hatch and a shooting rack. No plugs for lights, no eyes light, no black out lights, no creep lights, no camo.....Just a coyote killing machine when ever it's needed. Camo is another subject when it comes to a hunting rig. I DO believe it can really help in the day, but has little affect at night. I've hunted out of yellow hunting rigs, white hunting rigs, red hunting rigs and it didn't seem to make a difference at night. During the day the coyotes seem to hang out a ways 150/200+ yards and circle like they almost always do. They normally don't get much closer unless they have not seen the truck and the terrian lets them get closer. Then again, I've had them come striaght to the truck during the day? Knowing that none of this holds true every time, why I'm I even typing about it lol?

There is no clear coat over my camo paint job. It's all super flat finish and I didn't want any reflection. The camo works well for me both day and night. During the day it really melts into the background and at night, there is no reflection from the predator light. I'll see if I can get some photos of the hatch, etc.

I just read through this and I can tell you that even though it is legal to use lights at night in most of southern Nevada it is against the law to shoot from a vehicle and have a loaded, as in one in the chamber, gun IN or ON a vehicle in Nevada. Don't get caught hatch shooting here...Walt

Thanks John, It seems as if most people think it is legal to do such things here but it sure isn't and just like not knowing what legal animals and birds to shoot and all the other little laws that affect us. It really pays to know the regs when you go out. The fines are very expensive and the loss of guns and possibly vehicle is just not anything I would like to see happen to any of our members here. We are an up and up group of guys and gals here and to get busted for something you thought was ok and isn't would truely be ashame. I will get off, or is that fall off my soapbox now..Good Calling....Walt
