The rancher's son, 10 year-old Tyson, was my huntin' buddy today and going after his first coyote. Before the hunt, we rehersed everything to do when a coyote came in and then I let him shoot Dad's Browning Hornet for a little practice. With the Leo VX3 on 3 power, there was plenty of eye relief and Tyson had no problem powdering some baseball size rocks on a hillside 100 yards away....good nuff! The coyotes were super active today and I was watching one with binocs about 800 yards from the house hunting pocket gophers. We drove down the road to the cattle pens and were going to make a sneak around the coyote to get the wind right. Everything went great until two horses and a herd of stocker calves spotted us and started going beserk. I went ahead and placed the caller out but the horses kept knocking it over. On the third trip out to set up the caller, I just turned it on real low which scared the horses off but they came right back and when I increased the volume, they knocked it over again and the calves were running around like crazy. We went ahead and called and the coyote never showed. We headed for another pasture to get away from the livestock and as soon as we went through the gate, I spot two coyotes 600 yards away staring right at us. They finally went to the top of a hill and sat down. We tried to walk off in a direction away from them but they started barking which caused another pair to climb a hill in the direction we were headed and they busted us. Well, to make a long story short, we tried a few setups without any luck as every coyote in that huge pasture knew we were there. I think they were real active because of a storm front coming in tonight so we will have to try another time. Tyson understood and said it was still fun. I let him shoot my .222 before leaving and on the first shot, he busted a rock at 200 yards by holding a little over. In this wide open grassland, you need to catch the yotes napping at mid-day to have any chance of making an approach without being spotted. I had to grin when Tyson said, "those coyotes are really smart".....Amen!

Bill, it's great you got him out anyway. You can't control the circumstances of how the animals react. It sounds like he's pretty smart himself if he understands about coyotes. Nice picture of him behind the gun, I'm sure his dad will like that one.

Taking a kid hunting is one of the very best things we can do. Way to go Bill !Frank

That's a real good thing to do, Bill. You gotta be careful though ....... If you tach him too much you might get aced aut of your coyote hunting ranch.
