Hello eveyone, my name is Ben and i have been hunting for basically my whole life and i am looking for other people in the area that may have suggestions on where to go. I am originally from Indiana, so deer hunting is my main passion, but coyote hunting is definately one of the most exciting things i have have had the chance to hunt.

Hey Heath, I know you are a member i just didn't mention that for some reason or another. I actually went bow hunting last night and called one in about 15 yards, but he didn't stop and then winded me. It was intense nonetheless because it came right up behind me really close and i couldn't see it or move cause i was so close to it. I was afraid it was going to jump out and attack me.

Did you try barking at him to stop him?

I only saw him for a few seconds and i didn't have my howler out. I only had my distress call and i was trying to support my bow i both my hands. I had my 2D coyote decoy on the left and he approached on the right, but i don't know how he could have missed it. I know how perceptive they are! I thought that maybe he would see it and come in distracted for a good shot, but instead came up right behing me and that was that. He was a big boy too! That was the same spot where i ran into one earlier this week or late last week when was walking up the path. I have called different yotes in on numerous occasions frequently in the past couple of months. I just have been using different calls and blowing on them differently each time in the hopes that they wouldn;t get too educated. It seems to be working though.

Bark with your mouth not with a call. Just make a sharp bark like a dog. It doesn't have to be great but it will usually stop them for a second or two, long enough for a shot. People may think you're crazy outside practicing your bark so do it inside.

Thanks for the advice, and i will definately give it a try! I haven't hunted with anyone else here in CA since i moved here three years ago, therefore i never heard any other hunter call let alone bark. I am going this weekend with someone for the first time and i can barely wait! Everyday at work is like the opening day of deer season is getting ready to open. We leave friday and come back sunday so maybe i will get the opportunity to bark at some dogs. Wish me luck.

Ben, don't bark at them unless you want them to stop. If you bark before that all you'll see is them disappearing into the sunset. It's just a way to get them to hold up a moment for you to get a shot. Once you bark, you're busted and they won't hang around long. Good luck.

I usually just lip squeak and that gets them to stop if the caller is off. I have also lip sqeaked a young dog to a stop after I shot at him and missed.
If it flies it dies, If it runs its done, Hook'it, snag'it, gig'it, just kill itFire up the grill cause deer huntin ain't catch and releaseI dig hot chicks in camo bikini's with guns in their hands.

Many people say they know how to lip squeak but few really do. I use to be able to do it, but I got false teeth now and can't do it anymore. Same thing goes for the hand squeak, guys go "oh yeah, I can do that" and all they do is kiss the back of there hand. If you do a hand squeak right it sounds something like a lip squeak. I'm lucky, I learned the lip squeak from the master himself Murry Burnham. We were both judges at a calling contest held in California many years ago. He told me the California callers in the contest sounded like chickens, I told him what ever it sounds like we still got to judge it, so what ever chicken sounds best is the winner lol. True Story. To get a coyote to stop I have always used a simple bark, that usually works. When I was able to do it, the only time I lip squeaked was when the animal was hung-up.

Well now, that is a new one on me in regards to lip squeaking... Guess one is never too old to learn something, eh?! lolNow, our group has called in &/or stopped a good number of yotes over the years with both mouse squeaker devises & lip squeaking. (I normally just bark at 'em to stop them). To me, lip squeaking is nothing more than pretending to kiss your spouse (loudly), so how can there really be a right or wrong way? Or make it sound like a chicken? Especially since hung up yotes can refuse to come in (or won't stop), no matter what we do. Including barking at them! Barking is not 100%. Close though! Now, I know you gentleman are excellent yote hunters, but I'm no rookie, and this one really has me confused. Perhaps I am missing something (normal), but this whole right or wrong lip squeaking thing just isn't make any sense to me?!?! Sorry! Frank

I'm not sure what exactly one coyotes talking about either, but i do know that i called one in the other night soley with my lips. It was by accident when i thought that i heard a racoon or possum, but i didn't call them in. Instead i called in a coyote and he came running pretty fast! I think that by my experience with using my lips it is important to call as high piched as possible most of the time. By making a kissing sound with your lips like you are kissing your girl you are sucking in and probably not making the crisp sound that you could make if you were pushing air out. It takes practice but works well. i even get light headed when doing it too much, because i keep my lips so tight to make the pitch good and crisp and high like a rodent would make. Give it a try.

I'm right there with you brother, and i'm sorry if i came across wrong! Really, i didn't mean it like that. I agree, if you know it works then use it. I was trying to say the same thing. Coyotes like chickens though.Hahaha

This is all GOOD, everyone sharing their thoughts and experiences... Nothing wrong meant by it... And I agree on whatever works... also too funny sounding like a bird btw :)I guess I could be sucking air when lip squeaking, but never seems like it at the time?! The kissing example was the only thing I could come up with...Frank

I Actually hunted with some guys for the first time this weekend and that kissing sound is exactly what they used. They didn't get a chance to use it on the yote that we saw though cause i dropped him as soon as he was in my view. They never even saw him! We had a good time this weekend.
