Has anybody here ever speared a deer? I think it would be extremely difficult, much harder than bow hunting. At least with a bow you can pull back and hold until you're ready for the shot, then release. But with a spear you have to draw back and the throwing motion is likely to spook anything with half an eyeball.

I know a guy who knifed a 350 pound hog. He goes down to TX a couple times a year and does it.

I haven't but wonder can't help but wonder if it would even be legal. Most states are pretty specific with what methods you can use to harvest game animals.

I can not get them hardly with a rifle!
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

I speared a deer this season in France, but over there we use dogs and they do all the job you 'just' have to use your spear to a "tired" animal. Following the hunt is pretty exausting it s like a marathon!!!I use a Tanazacq blade ( french blacksmith) perfect for this task

In PA, they're working on making it legal to use an atlatl to harvest deer.www.atlatl.com

Thanks guys,Yes I m from France I just move 3 months ago.Actually I m looking for any hunting opportunities in South California, maybe someone has an idea??The season is almost over, but maybe there is still few places where I could find some wild boar(maily for bowhunting) because I m waiting for my papers to be able to buy a firearm....About spearhunting we mainly hunt the roedeer, its pretty small 60 pounds max but the buck could stab you pretty bad and usually a 10 inchs blade is enough. The biggest chalenge is for the european deer (up to 500 pounds,) every year people died when they tried to spear them, in a forest close to where i used to live a guy was stabed in the liver, he died in 30 min.... but this kind of hunt ins really a social event somtimes you have more than 100 people in the forest, the main team is riddind horses and you could follow them by foot or by bicycle, and there is a horn code when you see the deer. That s an old tradition in France but it s less and less popular because you need a lot of money to breed dogs, horses you need also lot of land and of course we also have some troubles with tree hoggers!!!

I've never speared a deer, but I roped one once. Don't know if it was legal at the time, but I had to do it.

Danny, a friend and I did the same thing once as teenagers. Stupidest thing, or at least one of the stupidest things I've ever done. You want to see a buck put his hoofs over his head and jump higher than your truck toss a rope over him. Man do they go ballistic. My friend still has a pretty good scar on his hand from holding the rope. I wasn't raised a complete fool so I let go of the rope and was headed the other way quickly. I think my buddy said, "Where did he go?" My answer was, "Where did who go?" It was over that fast. It's funny nowadays looking back though! :D

On a scout trip near Donner Pass I stalked a deer so close that I was considering jumping it and wrestling it by the antlers to the ground. I got that close by keeping a tree between us as I stalked it. Looking back, that would have been really dumb! But fun... :)

ShooterJohn, the deer I roped only had three legs, someone had shot off one of it's front legs. I did what I had to do at the time if you know what I mean, I felt it was the right thing to do. Had I took it to the DFG they probably would have put me in jail and I didn't even do it, I just did what the DFG would have done to the deer. That was also a long time ago.You are very right, a deer can mess a human up real fast with just it's hoofs.
