John in CA and I were talking on the phone around 2 pm and decided there wasn't time to get together so I bundled up in a goose down coat and headed out on the scooter. Destination was a couple sections of grassland about 2 miles from the house. Upon arriving, I immediately noticed new stocker calves and knew there were going to be problems with the curious bovines. I walked about 1.5 miles making three setups with no takers except a herd of calves circling the caller at each setup. Frustrated, I headed back to the scooter. When I was about 100 yards from my wheels, I had that sinking bloodless empty feeling. Looked around and decided to head with the wind for a half mile and hope to call a yote at an angle off of down wind. When the woodpecker started, a distant group of about 20 calves immediately came running in and made a half circle around the caller which was about 50 yards from my prone setup. I just kept the FoxPro going for about 10 minutes and decided to give up the ship. Before I got up, I started going through various sounds to see if anything would spook the cattle.....I would play a sound for 10 or 15 seconds and watch their reaction and then switch to another sound. I had gone through about a dozen sounds when I spotted a coyote trotting in about 150 yards out about 30 degrees off of downwind....UNBELIEVEABLE!!! When the yote got about 100 yards away, the cows ran towards him and got between us. I could see glimpses of the coyote through the cows and saw him moving to the right to get around them....dog poop.....that is downwind! I got the rifle positioned on the bipod and as soon as the coyote cleared the last calf, he stopped. Calves and coyote were like statues in a standoff so I put the crosshairs on the lower neck and zipped a bullet about 12" from a calve's leg and dropped the dog like a lead weight. The 55 gr. SXSP bullet from the 788 duece did exactly like the last coyote....stone dead and no exit! The sound playing when I shot the coyote was the dying crow but I guarantee you, he heard every single sound I played and switching sounds didn't scare bovines or canines! Some days you can't screw up no matter how hard you try. Attached File  coy_home2.jpg   78.59K   20 downloads

Good story Bill. Nice pictures too, I love that little scooter of yours. That's the thing I hate about cattle, they're curious. That's a pretty tight shot on that coyote but score one for you. I don't really think it matters what sounds you play as long as you give them something to listen too. Nice! ;)

Hey John - a gun shot will clear the cattle away.....notice there aren't any calves in the pasture in the scooter pic.....haha! Those calves were still hauling butt last time I saw em! 10-4 on the tight shot but I felt very safe taking it since the calves and coyote were in a Mexican standoff. Appreciate the nice words.

That's true about the shot will get them moving. I almost stampeded my hunting partners deer hunting once. I saw a coyote sneaking away from me on the far side of about 150 head of cattle. I quartered in behind them and shot that sneaky bugger with my .30-06. Everybody else was to the right of the heard, Oops! I laughed they didn't, I missed the jeep ride back to camp. I learned to be more sympathetic to my hunting buddies. ;)

great going and thats a nice one.
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

Another good job, Bill. I know what you mean about the cattle. Yesterday I had about 40 head that decided to lead me for a couple of miles. They would swing from one side to the other and stay ahead of me. I had the feeling like I was trying to hunt behind a parade.

Nice coyote. I just bought a scooter for my wife, yamaha Zuma. I told her I got it for her to have fun on, but I got it for me to hunt on. I thought you had a great idea with the scooter. Im going out Monday to give it a try. Good hunting.

Rimrock - guess we are going to have to carry an a 50 lb. sack of feed around on our walk-abouts.....I would probably make about 100 yards with the extra weight...haha!

Thanks to all for the nice words. I don't advise on changing sounds every 10 seconds while calling......I have already eliminated the only coyote in the world that would put up with such nonsense....haha!

I wonder what he thought was making all of those sounds? ;) Or maybe he thought he was going to a PARTY!
