Well, yesterday I finally got to get over my cabin fever and do some calling. The truck broke down on Tuesday and I had to wait til Wednesday night to go get it. Very frustrating to have missed the best day after the snows but so goes life. Decided that the little area near the river needed to have some coyotes shot and proceded to go there. This area is small and the coyotes are within the first couple miles of the houses. Plenty of coyote tracks in the snow and I am feeling pretty lucky that morning. Made my first stand and no takers. Oh, well, on to the next stand. Still I don't see any movement. let alone a coyote in my lap. This is tall sage hunting and very suitable for shotgunning. That's why I use my 17 Rem in it. To even the playing field and give those poor coyotes a sporting chance. After all I am a sporting kinda guy. Anyways, on my way out from the stand I see coyote tracks come into where I walked in and turn and split. Got backdoored by that one. On to the next stand and still no takers and I am starting to not feel so lucky anymore. Especially after looking at coyote tracks in the snow. The next stand I am very sneaky at my approach, watch the wind, truck is hidden on other side of hill, call, call, call and all I get are Ravens. Dang, what in the heck am I doing wrong here. This thought is on my mind to the next stand and I call in a Bewicks Wren. Well at least it's a beautiful day and I am just glad to be out in the brush.Dang coyotes, why can't I get any to show up. My next stand I know will be a good one as I have killed a few coyotes off it before. As I walk back to the truck I see fresh coyote tracks where as I was trudging up and around a finger on the hill a coyote must have been down below me as I was walking up and he said "So Long Sucker Ha,Ha,Ha." I finally decided that today isn't my day to call any coyotes in and I decide to go back into town. On the way back on the road I come onto two guys in a white truck all in camo. All I can do is hope they enjoy being out as much as I do. Lucky day or not. And no they didn't have any coyotes in the back of their truck either. See, some days are like that.

Getting out and enjoying the open and smelling the wonderful smells after a storm are worth a whole lot. Getting a dog is frosting, but sometimes the frosting is not needed to have something very enjoyable. Sounds like a nice day, albeit a bit disappointing.

Walt, still nice to get out after being cooped up with the weather and all. Some days it's just not meant to be but still enjoyable. Those Bewick's Wrens are fun little birds. I had one land on me once while hunting and pulled camo threads off my boonie hat. It didn't seem the least bit afraid of me.

SBF, Ha,ha,ha. Yes they are in there alright and get to eat housecats, stray dogs and the dog food that's left outdoors at night. If I had a FoxPro I would use a housecat sound but I don't and I don't feel like dragging the tape player with that sound on it out there. Maybe I'll work on one of my open reed calls and see if I can't come up with a sound that is at least close to one. And maybe try to make a barking dog sound like them little ankle biter dogs make. Bet they would work better than a rabbit or deer fawn bleat. Wonder what sound dog food makes, wish I wasn't so deaf. LOL...good hunting to you all...Walt

Some days the fish bite and some days they don't. Hey, it's there turn to win lol. Probably all them darn Utah and California hunters shooting up all your coyotes. Better luck next time NVWalt
