The more I look at these pistols, the more uses I can think for one of them. Would make a good truck gun for when I'm hunting at work (Yes, we are allowed to carry guns with us while we are working in the forest. Cool, huh?), could be used to hunt bears/cougars/etc. during elk season up here (centerfire rifles are not allowed in the forest unless you have an unused elk tag during elk season) and would make a good coyote gun since it would be easily concealable and quick to aim since it's more compact than a rifle. I'd like to hear some other opinions and experiences if anyone has hunted with one. I'm thinking of something like this or maybe the Encore Pro Hunter pistol in .25-06:

From the way I read it, it's pretty much 99% of the state. This is taken from the 2007 Oregon Hunting Regulations:Q. Can I hunt bear or cougar during deeror elk seasons?A. You cannot hunt any species with acenterfire or muzzleloading rifle without avalid, unused deer or elk tag for that timeperiod and area on your person during:Eastern Oregon controlled buck deercenterfire firearm season, Cascade bullelk season, coast bull elk seasons, RockyMt bull or either-sex elk seasons, or standardRocky Mt antlerless elk centerfirefirearm seasons (Nov. 17 - Nov. 25). Thisdoes not include controlled W High Cascade(119A) or Hood-White Rvr (141A)buck hunts (see page 31 for exceptions).You may use a shotgun, handgun, or bowduring bear and cougar seasons

Hey, in Calif if you are wandering about the woods without a deer tag, during deer season, carrying a center fire rifle, you are going to get fined. The presumption is that you are deer hunting and don't have a tag. Heck, just stay out of the woods for that short period of time.

I hunt with a Encore. I have barrels in 7/08 and 22/250. I love the pistol and have just about quit hunting with any of my other weapons. I can tell you that if you get one also get a pair of shooting stix as the pistol with a scope is a bear to shoot offhand without stix.-------Jim d

Used to shoot IHMSA with mine, the sport kind of died around here. Over the past few years I have converted it to hunting friendly. Calibers include.7TC/U super 14" a real tack driver with Hornaday 154 grainer's. Iron Sights..223 super 14" Burris 4X scope. Sighted for 200 yards..357 Remington Maximum 10", . I think the would be a nice Hog gun with the 180 grain Sierras. This one is fun to fire indoors! 30/30 Winchester 10", with a red dot scope. My new CQB Deer gun. Sighted for 100 Yards.I had installed the Pachmyer grips years ago and love them.

I have a 14" .223 Contender. They are accurate and fun to shoot but for a coyote hunting gun I'd much rather use a rifle. I've used mine before out calling, they require a lot more setup and are tougher to get on an approaching animal. I really like using mine during a ground squirrel shooting etc. where you are shooting at stationary stuff.

Since you plan to use a Encore with a large caliber, a LER scope will be necessary. Some people have a hard time using them so plan on doing quite a bit of shooting to get familiar with the gun scope combination. That 25-06 will be LOUD! But as a guy that shoots a 308 with a 13" barrel, I'm not going to try to talk you out of it. If you plan on trying to take moving game, the Burris 1.5 - 4X might be a good scope to start with. It has a large exit pupil and will make it easier to acquire the target. Get a fore end that you can rig a bipod on. If you try a long range critter you will find that a bipod or shooting sticks are your friend. This is my 17AH Contender. With the bipod and the 3-12X LER scope it has taken prairie dogs at 289 yds.Same gun using my version of shooting sticks. Notice range finder and hearing protection.

Having both LER scope and red dot, if I had to chose it would be a high end 2X red dot. Just easier to acquire the sight picture.

Nothing against TC, and alot of the guys with hunting shows are using them but what about the option of quick follow up shots? It seems like if your calling in doubles or need a second shot to put them down you want a few more rounds.

Well, I can understand the desire to have the option of a fast follow-up shot, but who makes a .25-06 pistol that holds more than one round?

No one that I know of. But, if you could stand to drop down to a Weatherby, they have a 5 shot mag for 243, 708, 4 shot for 22-250 and 6 for the 223. Course it's not a pistol, it's a Compact Firing Platform. Didn't know it was so hard to say, pistol.

Hey Wes, have you thought about the savage striker? I think it has a magazine but I don't think it's available in 25-06. A 300wsm pistol might be to much of a good thing but a 243 would be cool.

Savage shows nothing about the Strikers on their website. A quick search on Gunbroker turned up one, and it says it's a single shot. I may have to hold off on this idea for a little bit anyways as I'm probably picking up that Norma I was telling you about this weekend. Plus I need to cover the meat locker bill in the next week or two, need to order another shotgun, and archery season opens back up on november 17th... I love this time of year!!!

A hunting buddy has several Strikers. He had one in .308 Win. Ended up trading it in for a .243 Win. Recoil was uncontrollable, no one could fire it comfortably, that included a sniper from the NF police department and the owner, who spent three years on the USMC rifle team. The .243 takes several White Tail Deer every year.

I've never fired a Striker but, my 308 Wichita isn't bad to shoot. Fireformed some 7.62 ball ammo in it, no problem. Shot 180 gr loads at rams in silhouette, recoiled, but no problem. The grip design makes a lot of difference. A Rem XP-100 with the original factory grip can be a miserable b1tch with a larger caliber cartridge.

I have a handfull of TC's and XP's and they are fun to blast a coyote with or deer with but I still like my little BB gun for them coyotes. I have shot a couple doubles with my 221 fireball TC. But have watched just a few(?) more doubles get away using that single shot. Oh well. My late wife used her 30-30 TC 10 inch open sight very well on coyotes that back doored us. She was always the tail gunner when we hunted together. Although she always had her 12 guage with her she prefered her 30-30 TC.....Walt

I have a Contender as well, 14 in. .223 bull bbl, 10" 30-30. 22lr and 45L Colt/w choke.. "giggle" I havent tried putting a scope on it yet, but its a very versitile pistol. For an accurate handgun that comes in just about any caliber, its hard to Beat. JMO

Ive had that Barrel for years, I bought it when I wasnt living in CommieFornia. It never gets used, but its like owning a Piece of History. I call it my little piece of the Second Ammendment. Back when the Ammendments really Meant something. Thanks for the advice though.. I had better clean the rust out soon..

I went out hunting the other day. I had my Bow for deer, my 17hmr for varmits or fox and my TC410 setup for the close up fox shots. ended up with a deer in the freezer and a ground hog to use for fox bait on my next trip out! I love my TC for up close and personal stalking. I also have a 3030 barrel and 22-250 barrel all scoped.

I have an encore in .243 win. I have yet to kill anything with it, but I love shooting it. Also the looks people give you when you pull that thing out at the range is great too. I have had some people refuse to shoot it.

I have a G-2 myself with a 14" .223 and Leupold FX2. At 100 yards it is right there with my high end FN .308 in the accuracy department. It just shoots awesome and is a great time to use for sure. You are right you always get the looks and questions at the range, that is for sure. I am currently stationed outside of CA and will get that 45/.410 barrel while I can too.

I've got a encore as well, I have the .204 and .223 in the pistols and a 22-250 26 inch full contour barrel. In the light kicking pistols I use a rifle scope and it work alot better for me from the prone or sitting position, gotta love these t/cs. Mike
