Well my good friends and I decided that this was the year to bring home some venison. I pulled my tag and scouted a couple of weeks in advance for the perfect location. I found a place with plenty of bears but I just knew there where deer in the area. And I proved it right on opening day of the season. My buddy and I hiked down a ravine through some thick shrubs and managed to call in a bear with her cub to about 20 yards. After a bit of a stand off we decided that we should hike around and leave the Bruins alone and either find the Boar that left her preggers or a buck. We made it over a few more ridges and called in another Bear or perhaps it was the same one but this time it had three beautifull cubs. I tried to get my camera out as fast as I could but they were too quick for me. After an hour or two of following tracks and sign my friend says, "hey lets just hang in one spot and see if we can call one in." But we both agreed to keep hiking and about 5 minutes later I look across the ridge and 60 yards away a giant buck is staring at me. I don't know what to say other than reflexes, instinct or whatever you want to call it grabbed me and before I knew it I had pumped two slugs from my 20 gauge through its neck and watched it fold over on itself. We ran to the buck as fast as we possibly could. I was reloading as I made it to the ridge and found that my first shot hit it low on the back and skinned it for about a foot and a half up its neck before the bullet shot clear through and then the second slug hit it just left of the orginal shot and burst out through its throat leaving a large puddle of blood pooling quickly around it. I arrived to my first deer ever in the middle of its death throws and was amazed at how beautifull it was. I still can't believe what happened and I am so greatfull, what an amazing experience. The day was perfect just overcast enough for us to hike the 5 miles with a 200 or so pound deer on our shoulders without breaking to much of a sweat. I took my deer to the taxidermist and the butcher for some chorrizo and Italian sausage and I gave half of it to my hunting buddies who made this hunt possible for me. Without them the hike out would have been really brutal. Plus good company and friendship make this sport that much more fun. I am still feeling euphoria from the hunt and its been a few days. What a great way to spend the day. On top of it all It was my 5 year anniversary and my lady let me hunt instead of making me spend time with her. I can still remember her saying "you sould go hunting for our anniversary, we can spend time together next weekend" (She's definetley a keeper). Now I have to make it up to her. Anyway it was a great weekend, one I will never forget.Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

That is definitely a very nice buck! Congrats to you and your buddies. It's great having awesome partners to experience the hunt and enjoy the rewards! Btw, what area did you hunt? Not looking for exact details of your honey-spot, just the zone...

Jeff, are you using a computer at work? They may have blocked photobucket which is where his photos are hosted.

Yea, that's what I figured, John. A lot of pictures haven't been showing up since they blocked photobucket here at work. And they just did that recently too, kinda irks me as that's where I host from too and can't access my account now when I need to. I'm going to check out the buck when I get home though.

Super nice buck great job.
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

That's great! Congratulations on your first deer! Now that you've been bitten by the deer bug I'd be willing to bet that by next season you'll be hunting with a new deer rifle.
