This is going to be a long Story of my long day yesterday! Starts at 0300 opening day here on CP. I arrive with about 150 other hunters to check out at 0400 to there assigned areas to hunt. Of course it is pissing rain. About 0445 me and my Friend/Guide who has hunted the base over 27 years and his son are on our way. Since it was still raining we chose to wait in the truck till first shot time starts which was about 0650. While we were sitting in the truck a yote walks by about 0550 about 10ft from the truck I rolled down the window and lipsqueeked at it and it trotted back to the truck. Would have been a easy shot it was this years litter I let it go I was after deer. So get get out and commence to hiking the hills draws and canyons in our area. Still raining. Anyway I was sitting atop this big hill and my friends were trying to push any deer my way. about 0900 I saw a buck chasing a doe in the draw below me about a 500 yard shot I passed and tryed to get ahead of them they beat me to a impact area that is closed. Saw some monster tracks. I sat down and hit the cottontail-in-distress had a yote come flying down the oposite hill and straight up the hill I was sitting on but never got a clear shot it was a big dark colored yote though my buddy would have a shot but he never saw it. About Noon we headed to the wardens office to move to a new area and to see if anyone got anything. Out of 150 hunters only 50 were still hunting and a buck and a doe were taken that morning. The rain had stopped which I think had kept the deer from moving in the morning. We head out to the new spot suppose to be a good area according to my guide. We hike hills and beat the brush for hours I am hot and tired about to have a heartattack. So we sit on a hill for a few hours. About 500pm we start moving again this time the deer are as well. I jump a big 3X3 it scared the
out of me my buddy tries to stop it. We bark whissle yell nothing I jumped it about 50 ft from me and he is jumping through some thick stuff. I finally take a off hand shot as it is bounding over the hill clean miss. I tell my buddy if I see a doe it is done. Come over the hill and I see a doe broadside 50yards away on a hill I tell my friend I am going to take her. The 7MM Mag barks and she Jumps about 5ft I think she is going to go down right there her ears go back and she take off. Just as she jumped all I could see rising from the ground was this rack. A big 4x4 jumped up he was lying right behind her never saw him. I take off running my friends son is like buck and he takes off to shoot it. I go after the doe she dropped maybe 40yards from were I shot her. She was done. Well the big buck got away too the boy missed a long 500yard shot a foot in front of the buck clean miss. I think we saw 8 deer that day and 3 coyote my doe big dumb fat slow doe weighted in at a whopping 110 lbs gutted.
Texas Here I come. Got home at 830pm shot the deer at 530pm got it cleaned and gutted checkin and dropped off at the processor.

She will be better eating than those tags would have been. Nice going. Sounds like a good day.

I should have my meat back sometime this week going to make some jerky. Welcome anytime D-Man! I left the jeep at the check station no use driving two vehicles. At least that way I didn't have to wash her it was pretty muddy. Looked pretty funny though with a big chuck of meat on my rack going to the processor I got a few Crazy looks driving throug downtown Oceanside. I would have been cramped in the jeep with 3 hunters and gear.

Will have to hold you to that! Might have to drag Stan down with me if I come down that way. Somehow I think he will stop hanging a door to have some venison!Darren

Great story and nice shooin' on that doe. Yea, this time of year, any time I see a doe I tend to stand still and check for bucks that may be joining the female bunch. Meat is meat and am sure that doe will taste very good!
