Just got back from Ely country and did get to go hunting for a day. Had my granddaughter take a couple pics for ya but when I downloaded them I see that the digital was set on macro and the pics were so blurry I didn't want to waste space showing them. The hunting was bad to say the least. The aerial gunning and having 6 government trappers working the area has put a dent in the coyote population. You are hard pressed to find tracks in the area now. I hunted one valley that always had coyotes in it and drew a blank, so I went and called an abandoned ranch and low and behold I am sitting in some rocks and see an orange blur streaking towards me through the tall grass. I am thinking " How cool, a red fox" then I say " Too bad there aren't any red fox in this area." I stopped calling and put the scope on the orange critter and watched it come to a stop to check things out. It ends up being the largest ferral cat I have ever called in. It didn't last long and when I checked it out I was in amazement and aw at it's size. Just shy of 15 pounds and the size of a small female bobcat, only with a longer tail. I have shot a number of ferral cats that have come in to my dying critter blues but this one was by and far the largest I have ever called in and put to rest. Went into another valley and was setting up to call and a local rancher comes in to check his cows and we talked for a good long while. He owns the Steptoe Ranch, and he was telling me he doesn't hardly hear a coyote let alone see one since last year. Those ADC guys are doing their job as I didn't find tracks or sign for love nor money. But, I did try one spot that always has been a good producer and sure enough I get a double to come in and check up a few hundred yards out, I little coaxing with the call and here they come. I stopped them at 50 yards with a lip squeek and shot the largest of the two and watched the other one turn tail and hit her afterburners and the last I saw was she was a mile away and still running. I know you probably read what I posted in regards to your California hunting and here is why, I made 16 stands and called in one ferral cat and two coyotes and feel that I was just lucky to get the coyotes to come in as they may be the last in Steptoe Valley....Walt
