Well, we havn't been seeing as many bucks as we did two years ago. I probably should have waited for something a bit bigger but I'm about out of vacation time, so after passing on six forkies I decided to take this 2X3. Man, talk about ground shrinkage! He was 138 yards out and did a damn fine job of testing my patience as he always kept himself covered by tall sage brush. After a half hour of waiting, he slipped up and gave me a window to shoot through. The shot took him high thru the lungs. My 270wsm loaded with 110gr Barnes TSX bullets practicly jerked his legs out from under him and produced an instantaneous kill.With my tag filled and the pressure off, I found an old "song dog" call in my day pack so I decided to relax and do a little predator calling. I took this nice female a little under one hundred yards and once again the 110gr TSX droped its target like a wet dish towel. It did make a mess of her though and I figured that a game warden might think it strange that I'd be coyote hunting with such a powerful rifle during the deer season so I came home last night to pick up a few of my other calls and my .17 remington. I'll be heading back up this afternoon. Wish me luck!

Congratulations on the buck Matt. Better to get one than wait to long and maybe miss out. Nice shot of the coyote too. I wouldn't worry about a warden and what gun you are shooting. Good luck today I know you're having fun.

Thats great you filled your tag. Nice buck how much did he weight you know the saying you can't eat the horns. it's better than tag soup. good job on the coyote looks fat !

Well, the yote hunting didn't pan out for me this time. We got a late start heading back up on thursday afternoon and sonora pass was closed so I did't get to hunt til friday morning. I set up on saturday morning and wouldn't you know it, a good sized black bear came to my calls. The first time I've ever seen a bear in the wild and he's fiftey yards away, hungry, expecting a jack rabbit dinner, and all I have is a 17 rem.! I stood up to let him know I was there and he just looked at me curiousley, so I took a step twards him and that's all it took to send him running. The weather put the kaibash on the rest of my yote hunting time so I spent it trying to help my buddys fill thier tags.

He was just a little dinker. He only hung 95 lbs.. Good thing those barnes bullets don't ruin any meat!Hey SJ, I just noticed the "chief feathercloud" rank. Wes gave me that nickname after our first crow hunt together!

I put it in there! And it wasn't our first crow hunt, it was when we hunted over by the lagoon and you hammered that one crow out of the air with your 10 gauge at about 5 yards and it practically vaporized!So, a deer, a 'yote, AND a bear??? Sounds like you hit the grand slam this year. Did Rocky or Jeff bag anything?

They haven't filled any tags yet. Rocky missed one, his dad missed two, and Jeff hasn't squeezed on one yet. Wes, you wouldn't believe the amount of big bucks that are getting slammed all over D-6 this year! It makes me wish that I'd got a second deer tag.I've never had the inclination to shoot a bear. Mainley because it never seemed very sporting to chase one down with dogs fitted with radio collars, and a four wheel drive, then shoot it out of a tree. Now that I know they can be called in I might give it a try someday.......and from now on the small caliber varmint rifles stay home when I'm predator calling in an area that holds critters bigger than a coyote.

Must be the weather you guys are getting. Past few years have been real good down there. The weather is turning colder up here and I'm seeing at least half a dozen deer every night just driving home or hanging out in my driveway. I'm so anxious that I'm not sure how much longer I can keep passing on these forkies...

Nice going, Clamp... and Congrats on nailing that buck. When I used to be a very avid deer hunter, X-12 was my favorite Calif deer zone. I know it well, having been weaned on it & hunting it from the mid sixties to approx early 90's. It's an awesome area! Too funny about the bear, & glad you ended up ok, of course. I ran into them more than once there, including going right through our camp in the back country. Anyway, you were lucky this time, & as you probably found out, is a good idea to carry enough gun whenever callilng in cougar or bear country. I do anyhow.
