Ok folks, I will have one last time checking in this evening before I leave in the morning to my hunting spot. I am already having visions of big antlers and big fuzzy bears! I hope to report next Weds that we had a successful hunt with lots of pictures to share (trying to beat the crowd on the roaad for the Street Vibrations in Reno -- seems like if I don't get an early start up I-80, I end up getting stuck in the crowd of bikers, etc.).

Good luck and be careful they're talking about rain and some snow over the top today and tomorrow. My neighbor canceled his Street Vibrations reservations because he didn't want to get wet on his Harley. :smiley-funny-post-sign:

I am going to try and head back out to D3 area again this week. My brother went back out this past Saturday and had another 5" of snow n the ground. Going to hunt a couple areas and see where the deer are pushing to. I kinda want to hit my migration spot, but on't think it's actually cold enough to push them in the area (still at about 5,500' at migration - but may find a couple of bucks in there, if not, there's always a few bears poking around there).

Mac, make sure to check under any bridges nearby to look for hiding bears. :signgreatreport3kg:Attached File  1.jpg   27.95K   13 downloads

Mac,Deer are still up in the high country but concentrated around water due to dry conditions. See my post today regarding Back Yard Deer. We hunted coyotes on Sunday at the north end of Stampede Res. Saw several deer. The snow was hit and miss. They got five or six inches on the summit and in Glenshire, but I only got about two inched in Tahoe Donner and there was none at Stampede.Dan

Dan, thanks for the update! Yep, saw your last post...what a beauty. We haven't had too much luck around the 7,500' level, but am thinking that had to do with all the logging that's occuring where we go - surprised us when we pulled in - Sierra Pacific bought 36,000 acres on the back side of Sand Ridge and Castle Peak...go figure...we were hoping the other week we'd get some muley's pulling off on the west side of the peak as it had snowed a little more 8-10" around the ridges...person in my grp missed a nice buck opening day...jumped 2 others...then we only saw mainly does. Might try another place up high on Saturday, then go up north and a little lower where some deer have been frequenting another hunt-spot favorite.Btw, I heard Vada retired...saw the new DFG warden, nice guy. Do you know anything about Vada's property he's managing? Heard he's in a business partnership with some guy that owns some stellar property that looks to be great hunting, but has always been posted.

Mac,I suspected that Vada had moved on, but I had no idea what where or why. I do know he wasn't old enough to retire although he may have been able to freeze his retirement for a later date or in case he goes back into state service in another PERS job. I used to see him all the time when I worked for the Town but have only run into him once or twice in the last three years and not at all recently.Sand ridge used to be a very good spot on opening day. I haven't even been up in that area this year so I wasn't aware of the logging. Good luck this weekend.Dan

Mac,I hunted the back side of Red Top on opening day two years ago. Lots of big buck sign in those canyons north of the microwave station but the shale back there makes for tough walking with my old knees. I've been through Woodchuck Flats many times. Not sure where the private property would be. All that looks pretty accessible and crowded during deer season. Too many hunters, campers, and kids screwing around on ATVs in there for me. The ridge east of the scout camp at Stirling Lake is a good looking spot too My son killed a nice bear up there with a bow about 10 years ago. I have seen some nice deer up at Magonigal Summit on those timbered flats south of the road too. I have just quit hunting that area because there is so much pressure.Dan

We used to hunt the top of Red Top, but started on the south-west slopes and hunted up, we used to pull a lot of bucks off that mountain 20-30yrs ago - in fact my 1st buck was a 5x3 near the top. After the top was easily accessible we stopped hunting there - and, yes the shale slopes are nasty. Magonigal Summit, Sterling, Fordyce all used to be favorites, and again, you're right on the too many kids/motorcycles. This year the Forestry taped off many of the side roads the people used to take and they had 2-3 forestry workers up there all summer ticketing the speeders, etc. Forestry worker told me on one day they cited 20 people! Anyways, that why wee used to go way back down in the hole by Sand Ridge and behind Castle Peak...it's definitely a hike, but you get away from the weekend warriors out there. We hae our other favorites in D3 -- but of course each year we pray for the coveted X7A tag. Maybe next year. The property Vada is "supposedly" involved with is once you leave the paved road and take Road 85 up...the dry creek bed oon the right and the mountain side on the left is where it is...way below Wood Chuck...looks very promising and for years had "For Sale" signs...it is now posted as the property was purchased 2 yrs ago.
