We saw around 50 to 60 deer, mostly doe and yearlings and 5 spikes. The one lone fork was crawdad forked. We also were pig hunting. And jumped ONE boar.. Actually we were sorta bored glassing for deer, and spotted this silver coyote coming across the hill... Well you know how it goes... It was moving right??? So Son took a shot and when he did this big ole boar comes charging out of the purple brush and was doing 90 MPH down the ravine.. He tried one shot at him but at the distance and speed that boar was going it was a clean miss :( Both coyote and boar were over 500 yards.. Hit neither :( We never did see any shooter bucks, The fork was legal for CA but its a 3 point restriction ranch. There is nothing bigger than a spike on that ranch cept that one lone fork.. So no need to go hunt there if anyone is considering it. (Chalome) We spend the rest of the day cruising all over the ranch hoping for some signs of SOMETHING... Ran cross antelope.. Imagine that.. Middle of Calif and there is a tiny herd of antelope.. Got pics of course..And roadrunners were all over.. They sure are skittish birds. LOL... Next day we are back on the same ridge hoping to spot that boar... Sun comes up we are watching does and yearlings bounce all over the dang hillside, no bucks. No boar... and guess what comes trotting down a path?? Miss Coyote..Same one son missed the day before. Shes trotting along pretty good, so my hubby gets set up on her, ranged her at 430, he sets the scope at 450, ranged one last time and at 480 yards he dropped her with one shot :horse apples: Great shot too... she just went rolling... dead as a doornail. We glass a bit hoping maybe the shot spooked something up, but no such luck.. Drove around to the other hill and walked down to get the coyote.. She was actually a puppy :rofl2: Beautiful silver with tan... I got all excited since Id been wanting a pup to mount.. Took measurememnts, she was just barely 30 inches from tip of the nose to the base of her tail.. Real small dainty girl :) Beautiful.. AND fuzzy... But with the triple digit temps all my ice in the cooler had melted :( so we couldnt bring her home....And way too humid to get her hung and salt dried.. I am way bummed... Hubby on the other hand was just thrilled because not only did he shoot her at 480 yards but it was a puppy so even a smaller target LOL... It was a fairly decent weekend. Hotter than blue blazes, Thank goodness our trailer has ACs... The cab on the ranger works great but definetly needs an AC in it.. I also got to try out my new camera. It is just awesome. Its amazing how far out I can zoom. Anyhow heres some pics of the weekend. Too bad about not getting a deer, but at least you had a good outing and you did get a coyote. Too bad you couldn't bring her home. Bummer.By the way, I lived and hunted for a lot of years and don't believe I've heard the term "crawdad forked." What does that mean?

It means the fork is too close together.. Has no width.. Like crawdads pinchers :smiley_kewlpics: Instead of being wide between each tine the fork is narrow...

Yep did some calling, Not the greatest place to do it though. These coyotes even hear or see a hint of humans or something they arent sure of, they are off and running for the next county.. Theyve been shot at ALOT... As for the long range shooting.. Both my son and husband do it alot. Longest shot so far is 1035 yards on targets... Have that on video :smiley_kewlpics: the longest on a animal was 645 on last years buck.. Dropped it like a rock :) I keep my shots under the 400 yard mark LOL.. My rifle is good but out past 400 yards I worry about the ability to have enough stopping power when it gets there. And I wont change my load because it shoots so dang flat and accurate.. My buck last year was just past 400 yards. One shot, one kill :)

Sorry you didn't get a deer or pig. But at least you gave it the old college try. Great shot by your hubby 480 is nothing to sneeze at. What rifle was he shooting?. I'm surprised you didn't see my Wylie Coyote's since you saw so many Roadrunners. :smiley_kewlpics: Isn't terrible how much we rely on air conditioning as much as we do. When we were younger we wouldn't have given it a second thought. I guess we're just spoiled. Still it sounds like a fun time and the NEW camera is working good. :)

LMAO Yes I NEED my air conditioner... Hey when it gets oround 102 or higher I must have cold air...Thank goodness the trailer has two :smiley_kewlpics: It cools down pretty quick.. Hubby is shooting a 300 win mag.. shooting 150 grain Speer Hot-co sp... Factory :) Using a leupold scope that he had set up for long range shooting. So no guessing about drop or anything like that. Just range it, dial the turret to the yardage, tap it and shoot. He also uses shooting sticks.. Basically a tripod with a rear support leg that supports the butt of the rifle. Makes for extrememly accurate shooting :)

What's the barley like down there. It's been a while since I've been down there. Last time I saw a couple of coyotes and a badger. I've never even seen a decent buck, let alone a 3 point. Have you tried Park field? It looks better for deer, but who knows ?

Twitch - The barley is cut, nothing but short stubble for miles what they hadnt disced to the dirt.... Was rather dissappointed as we were told it was planted.. Planted seems to imply PLANTS being there LOL... Havent tried Parkfield, but wanted too.. Looks like they might have more trees there.. Saw lots of what I THINK are badger holes... Would love to find one of those furry nasties come winter time.. But cant go in when its wet :) Have you hunted any up north?

Its not even an expensive one!! I picked it up at Walmart... Its a FujiFilm- Finepix s700, 7.1 megapixels, 48X total zoom, ISO-64/100/200/400/800/1600, Auto mode, picture stabalizer, natural light mode, (lots of modes) also has different exposure modes, the red eye flash thingy, continous shooting, 2.5 wide view LCD monitor, takes video at 640x480 pixels , and has xD/SD compatible slot. Internal memory is around 27MB but I have a 1 gig card in it. With the 1 gig card you cant take around 587 pics. Also Im still on the same 4 double A batteries that I put in it when I got it.. HUGE bonus compared to my last Kodac that would eat batteries every hour... Kid you not if you used any zoom at all the battery drain was unreal.. Total price for camera and the 1 gig card came to 270.00 So far Im quite impressed with it :) I wanted something I could get close up shots without being close up.. It does a pretty decent job :) And when you zoom way out there you just tap the button and it focuses it right up, then take the picture :) Once you are out there you can take as many pics as you want but when you first zoom it really helps to tap it so everything gets real sharp.. there is probably something out there alot better but for what it does and the price Im happy with it :) Im not real up on FujiFilm if its a good brand to have or not, over all I liked its performance better than the little cannon or sony they had there for a much higher price. Just found the F-mode setting using 7MF meaning massive pixels you can get 294 pics on the 1 gig card, 7M normal- 586, 3.2 mp-659, 4m 1031, 2m, 1640 and .03m 7996 pics LOL..

Man alive Rae! You could be a salesperson for Fuji! :) Except maybe the part. :)

the red eye flash thingy

I used to take thousands of slides when I worked as a commercial photographer. But it is amazing the numbers of shots you can get on some of these memory cards. an you even imagine taking 7996 pics? I usually still shoot as the highest quality and then size them down as I need them. That way in case you need a large blow up you can do it. The mega pixel size of these new cameras is sort of misleading though. They are really interpolated pixel size meaning the camera adds to the image not the actual size of the photo image. But still they do amazing things in a small package.
