lavar, you can still buy a bear tag as they are unlimited. The general rifle season closes once a certain number of bears have been harvested...1700 the last couple yrs or Dec.31st which ever comes first. For archery, bear season is usually from mid Aug. to about the 1st or 2nd week in Sept. They don't have bear zones like for deer, but the season typically opens with the deer season in the given unit except for a few X zones which open around the 14th of Oct.Pick up a CA Hunting Digest at your local Wal-Mart or DFG and it spells it out pretty well.S&S

Far as I know you can buy bear tags anytime, (unless something changed) but once the state quota is hit you have to stop hunting wether you fill your tag or not. Tags are state wide. But only open early in certain zones such as A zone... Check out the Ca Dept of fish and game site to be sure.

They still have last years numbers up, but when they do get around to posting this years count you should be able to track the number of bears harvest herehttp://www.dfg.ca.go...vest/index.htmlAs you can see, the quota was not met last year so bear season ran through December 31st.
