Well after shooting a few doves in Argentina, I've got to admit that I'm not as excited about dove season as I used to be in my youth. It appears that if the warm weather holds in Central Ca. that we are in for a good opener. I've seen some very large concentrations already. I plan on shooting locally for the opener then travel down to Yuma for the the week after. I was at a game feed last night in Modesto and was talking to the head bioligist ? spell? for DU in the western states region and he said we are going to have a great Duck season if the weather cooperates. I can't wait for the 3rd wkend of Oct. He also said it looks like we are going to be able to take 2 Canvasback. Also Goose limit up to 6 he thought. Sounds like I need to find a Goose Shooting spot.

I couldn't be more exciting for duck season this year. Two canvasback!!! 6 geese!! All that much better. Hopefully the rice crop works to our advantage and doesn't set us back like last year.

I'd really like to get into duck hunting this year. I hunted a couple times when I was in mmy teens on private property that had a pond...more ground N pound than calling them in. I pheasant hunt mostly, but duck, geese, etc sound waaay fun. I heard out by Manteca/Stockton you can apply and purchase season long blinds and they are on a lottery type system...anyone know anything about this?

Unfortunately, I am not affluent enough to afford a blind and am consequently a refuge hunter with occasional access to a blind (a cheap one which is "owned" by my friends uncle). Post up if you find info about the Stockton area blinds. You can't beat duck hunting, in my opinion. It's what I wait for all year, even on a public refuge.

bf,You said you'll be in Yuma the following week, but have you ever participated in the Big Breast Competition in Yuma?I know this year is Big Breast XIX (19) and the event seems to get bigger each year. :)S&S

S&S Yep been there done the Spragues Big Breast. Rumor has it, it's a rigged deal with locals pen raising white wings? Opening weekend is so busy and crowded down there that the hotel rooms are double+$. I've got a friend down there that farms 8000 acres so after 20 yrs. of going down on the opener I findly wised up and go the week after, rooms for cheap, no nimrods trying to shoot your eyes out and the limits are easy prior to breakfast. We either hang out at the pool in the afternoon or take a siesta. We BBQ the doves for appetizers and enjoy the desert. I have several of the B Breast T-shirts from years past and you really get some wierd looks from the women? BF

I read somewhere that the dove season at Lake Perris runs from 1st Saturday after Labor Day through January. Is that true, or is it the same as the general season for that zone?

I can't wait! One of my friends has a ranch and he never really paid much attention to how many dove pass by until last year when I shot a limit in a little under an hour while he was feeding calves. Hopefully I can get him to drag out his shotgun this year.

I wish I knew of somewhere to hunt them where I didn't have to pay $250 for a limit. :censored[1]:

That's the first time I've heard someone give mourning doves a nickname like that. Thats what we call barn pidgeons and crows.

When they're after your chickens feed and they run around on the ground they look just like rats with wings. But tasty rats with wings. :censored[1]:
