first of all, im a marine stationed on camp pendleton in california. I'm originally from upstate NY and I have been away from hunting 3 years and i missed it so i figured i would try my luck in the deserts and mountainous terrain in cali. i went to my local gunshop and bought a remington .223. Then i realized that this is california, and hunting isn't very common in southern california. For god sakes, you go to walmart and there is absolutely NO hunting gear. It's ridiculous. So i got my license, found a hunting shop, and tried to find some spots. Nothing. So i called the local game warden and turns out that hunting is allowed on Camp pendleton. I got my base permit and went hunting with its more than 125,000 acres and approximately 200 square miles of terrain, Hunters can pursue deer, cottontail and jackrabbit, squirrel, dove, quail, pigeon, duck, goose and coyote during their respected hunting seasons. BINGO i was hooked. And turns out i am the first hunter to hunt coyotes on camp pendleton because Coyote hunting just opened on base for the first time ever three weeks ago. S*&% even if i dont shoot any, i feel good to know that im the first one to hunt them. Any how (i know this is long and drawn out zzzzzzzzzzzzz) but i have to tell you about this weekend, it was bananas! i got to the base at 0500 and sat under a tree ( just about the only tree there, unless you count cactuses) and started howling. Immediately i got 3 answers. i began with my jackrabbit in distress routine, but no doggs came. 45 mins past and i got up to explore the terrain. About 1 mile or so from where i was sitting, i found a dead yote. i set up 200 yards away and started screamin'. about 10 mins pass and 2 yotes were racing to me. when i say racing, i mean these dudes acted like they havent ate in years! they didnt even give me time to get ready. I shouldered my .223 and they caught my movement and left just about as fast as they got there. i got off two shots but nothin. i called for lil while with no avail so i walked back to my jeep. Running down the road was another yote! I guess my question is, Where have you guys been hunting lately and how has it been?

Welcome to the forum Trevor! ;) I'm sure you'll get some responses but it sounds like you have a good spot and are having fun. Great choice on that .223 by the way. :)

semper fi trevv I too am new to this. The 2 guys I hunt with and I are all former Marines. We all live either in Joshua Tree or 29 Palms. I work in the San Diego area. If you would like to hook up and shoot the breeze and maybe plan a hunt out on theMNP or Pendelton leave me some info here and I'll get back to you. The one guy I hunt with has been hunting predators most of his life and is very forth coming with advice. Let me know.

There was some pretty decent hunting over in the Salton Seas area when I was there last year.

There are lots of yotes down there though I have never hunted them. My wifes family is from down by there.

trevdogg160, I've always wanted to predator hunt in camp pendleton. I know the place is loaded with coyotes not to mention bobcats, gray fox and lions. Years ago I hunted around it and did pretty good, now that's all houses. Good hunting to yeah. :)

Is Camp Pendleton open to retired military, too?

Yeah, excellent question! Gary

I found a POC for info on hunting Pendleton ....Those interested in hunting can find out more details by visiting Victor P. Yoder at the game warden building(Bldg. 25155) located in the 25 Area. He may also be reached by calling (760) 725-3360http://www.marines.m...AA?opendocument

My guess is yes-Beale is open as well but hunting predators is a no-no.Just got to love our Liberal Environmental Flight at Beale....NOT

Steve, I'm going to go out on a limb here but I don't think that's the reason you can't hunt them. If it's like some other airport properties I know of, it's because the coyotes keep down the rabbit and bird populations without being a problem to aircraft themselves.

That makes logical sense to me. Birds are hard on airplanes.

Rabbits at airports was the reason I got my first shotgun at a young age. They used to have drive hunts to reduce the rabbit population at what was the time Sacramento's main airport now Executive Airport. Shotguns only due to the proximity of the planes and homes. Those were some great hunts with rabbits running everywhere. We would get pickup loads of them, fun! :(
