If you had a choice between the above in a bolt action, for long range, say 0-400 yards for deer which would it be?

I use a Rem 700 in 7mm Mag, and my uncle, whom i hunt with, uses the same, but in .300 Win Mag, and a good friend uses a 300 WSM.

Many years ago I read a lot on the two calibers. As I recall, the balistics were a little better on the 7mm. I went with the 300 for a couple reason. 1) there is a huge selection of 30 caliber bullets on the market and 2) my uncle had about 600 rounds of empty brass and the dies to reload with. Both are top notch calibers as far as I am concerned and you'll do great with either one.

Ive got both and killed deer with both. the 3oo is to big and heavy for where and the size of deer.in D 6. the 300 is a 700 remington lam. stock and stainlis. heavy gun. shoots great. My 7mag is a ruger MKlV. stainlis with a light senth. stock. love it for cal. deer. does not tear them up at close range. 150 grn win.moly soft point. . If Iwas to go out to Utah the 300 would go. Bigger deer and elk. But now Im gone down to a 25 06. The 7 mag I think shoots alittle flatter. But there is alot of 30 cal bullets out there. ammo in7mag easyer to get.

remington managed recoil rounds do the trick here. puts the 300 win mag down around a 30-06 308 and 30-30. not to mention there are other "light" loads you can get as well as hand loading.I think my next gun is going to be a remington sps ss or xcr in 300 win mag. I may even get a sps with a box mag.

Do not have one of them BUT I WANT BOTH

Well We have the 7 mag, 300 win mag, AND the 300 ultra mag.. The 7 mag is good, son shot his first pig with it and also deer/elk., Definetly drops them. but we dont use it too often because it has a heavy bull barrel that makes the front end weigh a ton. Shooting sticks are a must... I kid you not that dang bull barrel makes it like someone is hanging off of it.. Hubby shoots his 300 win mag and it takes out deer and elk just fine. Tends to make a big hole in coyotes LOL.. The 300 ultra mag is much bigger and since my son just got that one we havent aimed it at anything but paper. That and because the cost of the bullets is basically 3.00 each.. Cheapest weve found for the sirrocos he uses is 54.00 and as high as 65.00 a box. Needless to say its not like hes gonna be popping bunnies with it LOL.. Hes using it this year for deer/elk. It is deifntly a good long range rifle :smiley-funny-post-sign: So is the 300 mag.

Out to 400 yards I don't think that the deer will know the difference. As far as bullet selection goes in either 7mm or 30 cal there are probably over 200 different bullets available in either caliber. Where the 300 takes over is with the heavy weight bullets. There are very few 7mm bullets available over 175-180 grains (a few oddball 200+ grainers are made but they're not common) but in .30 caliber 180 - 220 grain bullets are very common and there are a few oddball bullets available over 240 grains.

Last year I purchased the Benelli R1 in a .300 win mag. I used to hunt with a .270, still do for some areas as it still produces a flat trajectory...but I'll tell ya, the .300 win mag at 400yds with standard loads has ~2,000fps ...that is some knock down power! It worked well on my bear last year - I purchased in anticipation of my Elk hunt...again, depends on what you plan to hunt and where...blacktail and whitetail you can use something less powerful...

I have 2 7 mags and 3 300 mags along with a 300 ultra mag. I,ll stand by the 300's every time. Bullet weight being the same the 300 will outperform the 7 every time, plus you have so many choices in the 300's.

Both great rounds though I'd give the upper hand to the 300 as an overall better choice if you are going to be hunting elk, moose and the big bears.

I think the 300s all of them are a little more gun than the 7mm mag. at 0 to 200yrds I like the 7 and 200 to 400 its a tie. out over 400 the 300s got it because of the weight of the bullet choices. Now I got a 7mm with a 3x16x44. and I just took the scope off the 300 wen. and put it on the 308. Now what would be a good scope to put on the 300. another 3x16x44 or bigger?

7mm shoots a little flatter300wm hits harder but has slightly more recoil.300wm ammo is more available and has a larger selection.300wm is 30 cal and has far far bigger selection of reloading stuff.I took the 300wm over 7mm due to selection of ammo and reloading componants. as well as the variance in loads you can do.to be honest however I kinda wish I had gone with 270 or 308 or a Short Mag just to lighten my rifle a bit. Thank God I didn't get some heavy barrell Target/Sniper style riffle like a 700 PSS.

How to start a fight...What caliber is better, a ? or a ?I personally shoot a Remington Sendero in 300 win mag. I purchased it over one of the new ultra mags, because no matter where you are you can probably find ammo for it. I also looked at the ballistics and had shot them previously. Mine has the bull barrel, and is referred to as a boat anchor by my brother. I know he's just jealous.

Hey - how popular is the .35 Whelen over in the States? It is getting some following here in S/E Australia, mainly after the big Sambar Deer that are around, especially the bigger Stags. 200 > 250 grain bullits.Up to 20 yds - it is a good combo!

The .35 Whelen used to be a very popular wildcat but once the flatter shooting .338 winchester came out it seemed to fall off in popularity. There are alot of .35s still in use over here, but mostly in the nothern country where elk, moose, and large bear are hunted.
