Went out today to try and put some of the info that I have learned from all of you here on the board to use. Went up to Spenceville about 10am. While driving along looking for a place to park, a coyote runs across the road in front of me. By the time I got stopped and got the rifle out, he had run across about 300 yards of opening and into a bunch of oaks on the top of the hill. I loaded up and headed across the opening, heading for a spot several hundred yards north of where I last saw him. Topping the hill, I ran into a herd of about 25 cattle. They headed off south towards the hill where I had last seen the coyote. I got behind a tree and pulled out the circe caller and began making noise. I say noise, as I am not sure I sound like anything that really lives out there. But lo and behold, the coyote comes out of the trees, just the other side of the cattle. He stops and looks at me and the noise I am making, and then proceeds to go from my right to my left, circling around the cattle. After he clears the cattle I give him what I think sounds like a bark and he stops. I zero in on his front shoulder and squeeze one off. But just as I squeeze the trigger he takes off again. This results in my gut shooting him. But all ended well as he didn't go far. About 50 feet or so and he dropped over. He was still alive when I got to him so had to use another round to finish him off. The distance was at 180 paces. I was shooting a Remington 700 VLS in .223 that I recently bought. I have only shot 40 rounds through it before today. Three more setups yielded nothing, but it was FUN!! Thanks to all who gave me advise and encouragement.I have a photo but don't know how to post. Please help! Here you go!Posted Image

Congratulations. It is excitiing the first time, and the second, and third, etc. If you click on the small icon with the image of the tree above, it will open a window. You just fill in the address in the window, and you are good to go. You have to have your photo posted somewhere on the web first.db

OK, I have gone to photobucket.com and registered. Hopefully there will be more pictures to post. Yep, that was my first dog. At least the first at calling. I have shot them before when deer hunting and also one in southern Calif, years ago, that was trying to eat my neighbors dog. I got one of two that were trying to ambush the poor little poodle. One got away. But this was my first attempt at calling and won't be my last. At least not the last attempt, but who knows, the way I sound they may just run the other way.

YA HOOOO great! and the little story was pretty darn exciting. nice looking one to.
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

Yea, Spenceville is around Camp Far West. Just north of it actually. I came in off Hwy 20 since I live in Oroville. I drove all the way to the entrance of Beale AFB and then turned around. But the dog was shot about a mile before I got to Beale. Nice country, and easy to hunt. Now if I just knew what I was doing.....

There is nothing like the first one called in to make you an addict. You will remember that coyote over all the rest years down the road. Walt

There is only one thing that you can do. Memorize this phrase: "Hi, my name is __________, and I am a varmint hunter ------"Congratulations. Don't worry about the sounds. You will get better. I sometimes think that coyotes respond out of curosity anyway.

Hey, congratulations on your successful hunt! As everyone says the first one is the best one, you'll always remember it. We had talked about your new gun and it's a beauty, especially stretched out over that coyote.
