Without giving up you super secret spot, Where is everybody puttn in for this year? I will probably try X-8 again and might try Wyoming for out of state. Might even venture to Idaho for an Elk tag.

I'll be hitting D-13 again. I didn't 06 for deer, and I didn't do any good in 05. However, My spot has produced great over the last 10 years and hopefully I'll get one on the ground this year...

I hunted Idaho in 2005. We tried both elk and mule deer around Salmon River area. One us was able to get an elk tag - all three bought over the counter mule deer tags and filled them. we went late in the season for elk and only saw elk early morning (before sunrise) and at night in the valleys. however, we saw many elk taken in the high country with guides flying in the animals to be processed in town. I thoroughly enjoyed Idaho and if it wasn't for my oppty to draw for Wyoming this year, I'd go back to Idaho again. Good Luck! Btw, I've posted pictures of the deer in this area of the forum and you can see them - quite nice.

The Salmon River area huh. Did you see any Wolves or Wolf sign? I'm not sure if you're a fisherman, but I hope you wet a line while you were out there. I'm planning on hunting in the Magic Valley region as I have family throughout the Boise-Treasure Valley area.If I can combine it, I'd like to hunt deer in the Brownlee reservoir-Hells Canyon area as I go there every year for the Chukar opener.S&S

Funny you mention it..there were wolve tracks all over the country. I know they hve given the free rangers rights to take wolves now that they are over-populating again and damaging the livestoock and game animal herds. We just missed 7 wolves by 10mins - we came upon a hunter and he was glassing them playing in a field early in the morning. They are definitely out there.

Area 10 in Colorado for Cow Elk Darren

Darren,Is too many hunters a problem when hunting Elk in CO?I've heard many a story from hunters in the past that said they stopped hunting for Elk in CO during the general season b/c it was simply to crowded. S&S

Last year I hunted second season in Area 11. Lot of hunters that hunted from the road. In area 10 4th season, I swear the only other hunters I see are at the bars at night. As my buddy says, "Blaze orange, beer, and bragging" by that bunch. We tend to park and hike back to certain areas a few miles. Personally I won't be going back to area 11 as it is over hunted. Area 10 is great, and I have hunted that area extensively over the past 10 years and know it well. A bull tag will take 10 - 12 preference points. Get your cow tags, learn the area, put the meat on the table, then in a decade take your trophy bull. At least that is my strategy! Plus the coyotes in the area are real dumb which makes for fun hunting as well!Darren

See lots of 6-8 point bulls while I am hunting out there. Two years ago 7 point bull 50 yards away from me skylined on a ridge broadside. Never wanted a bull tag so bad in my life at that point. My son was with me and he still talks about it. More meat in the fridge for this year. Plus my buddy always gets an antelope tag, and a big horn sheep tag on Pike's peak (12 years straight for the sheep (ewe tag)). Always eat well when I go out to his place. In fact on my website here you can see some pictures. Contact me via PM for a login / password pair to see some of the other pics.Darren

John,I'm right there with ya. I'm planning on doing the antlerless deer and elk hunts in unit 39. I have relatives throughout the treasure valley.I drive through your part of town periodically...I'm not sure if it's Twin Falls or Jerome, but do you ever go to the A&W Rootbeer gas station on the north side of the 84. I was stationed in Colorado Springs in the Mid-80's and traveled on the eastern slope of Pike's Peak when I worked inside Cheyenne Mountain (War Games). Always in the early morning on the way to work and coming home we used to see the biggest bucks and elk on that ridge. My face used to be plastered to the windo of teh Air Force shuttle bus with my mouth watering, palms sweating and almost breaking out in "hunting hives"...AfterI left in '87, they opened that ridge up to limited archery hunts for 3 years, then they shut it down. I see that place in my dreams!!Darren, have you ever hunted Cottonwood Pass? Excellent mule deer and elk hunting!!

Haven't hunted Cottonwood Pass. My good friend lives in Monument, and we go pop P-dogs outside of the Springs all the time though. Heard good things about the pass, but I think it takes a lot of preference points for the buck tag up there. Where we go in Area 10 the deer are everywhere, only problem no deer season when 4th rifle for elk is going on. Last year went 2nd season in area 11 and we did get a doe tag.Darren

Yea, when I was there we didn't need pref points...I feel your pain, having not drawn for Elk in Wyoming this year. Oh well, I'm either going to draw my X7a tag this year (going in with 4pts) or back to Idaho.P-dog target practice always fun outside the Springs!
