I have an older guy that works for me that is cleaning out his gun collection and he is wanting me to buy his M1 Garand that was converted to a .308. He is asking $700 bucks. I have been thinking about buying it but im a little skeptical on the conversion.
Is this a common conversion for these guns?
And, are there any drawbacks other than it not being original anymore?
The M1 isnt something Ive always dreamed of owning but if the opportunity presents itself to add a good gun to my collection, why not?

That is a normal conversion. Find out if he is interested in trading for a Springfield 1911A1.

Some of the conversions work fine some do not. "I personally" will keep all of mine as they were originally built----30-06 and feed them mil surplus or my mil-surplus equal hand loads.

Back around the time that I was in the US Navy and shooting a few matches at Uncle's expense the conversion of M1s to 7.62 NATO was in full swing. This was in the early '70s. There were two methods of conversion. If the weapon was a match gun, the barrel was replaced, and rechambered. If the weapon was just a regular grade weapon for the grunts, a soft steel insert was placed in the chamber and a high pressure cartridge was loaded and fired to expand the insert and thus complete the conversion. There were instances where the insert didn't expand enough to fix it in place and the insert fell out. If I was buying a converted M1, I'd give the chamber area a close inspection.

If I was buying a converted M1, I'd give the chamber area a close inspection.
He was saying somethin about havin to "re-do the bridge" Im not exactly sure what that means or if its a pain in the ass to do.
