Had a great opening weekend chasing ditch chickens. Started out Saturday morning in heavy fog and did not have much luck. Then it was like a switch was flipped and the fog lifted.

We headed to another field when we spotted a farmer harvesting a rice field. My kids wanted to watch for a few min to see how it was done. The harvester turns the corner and heads back down when about 6 roosters come busting out and into a field we had permission to hunt! Oddly enough one of our other party members was watching the same thing from across the field.

It was a pheasant-palooza! We parked and loaded up as quick as we could, let the dog out and made it about 50 yards before we had a solid point.... flush and BANG. I get my first of the day! We walk another 20 yards and my son nearly stepped on another bird... Flush, Bang, another dead bird. 2 birds -2 shots in less than 5 min!

As we were throwing HI-5's and whooping it up. I look over, and the dog is locked up again 30 yards to my left. Flush , Bang, Bang, Bang , and I get my second and limit.

We hear shots across the field as my hunting buddy picked his first of the day, then minutes later got his limit.

Sunday was another story. Had 5-6 more birds get up about 70 yards in front of us in the same general area and go to parts unknown. At least 3 of the 6 or so were hens as the dog pointed them hunkered down in a ditch. We did jump 2 more roosters and my son was able to connect on the first and well I missed the second.

All in all it was a great weekend with hopefully more to come next weekend. Here are some pics......

No wild birds this time, they were all planters. We are members of a co-op hunting club in the Robbins area. There are a bunch of wild birds around but they are very wily! We get more wild birds towards the end of the season when the weather get's worse.
