Since today was consider a holiday and the children did not have school, we decided to head up to the mountain for our annual play time in the snow. I brought my shotgun just in case I should run into any tree squirrels, quails, or turkeys. Not only that, it was also used as a protection against either bears or cougars. Got up to our usual spot and there wasn't enough snow on the ground to make the hill a good sledding area so we moved on up higher. We then found an excellent spot to stay and play for the next 2 1/2 hours. After the fun, we had snacks and I decided that since we are already up at the mountain, why not check out my secret spot to see if there were any turkeys around. So 30 minutes later, we arrived at my secret blm spot. Time was now 3:30. As soon as I pulled up into the dirt road and was getting ready to put the car in park, I noticed a group of turkeys out to the corner of my right eye. I told the wife and kids and everyone was excited to see the turkeys as well. So I then grab my shotgun, loaded it up with 3 shells and slowly made my way out the car door. I see them walking into the nearby brushes so I slowly followed. 15 yards in and I spotted the group. I counted, 1, 2, 3, all the way up to 9. There was even a young greyish colored one. Anyhow, after the quick count, I raised my shotgun and aimed for the closest and the biggest one. Boom goes my shotgun in the area of the turkey's neck/shoulder and I can see him flopping on the ground. Strange but the other turkeys did not run or fly away. Too bad you can't shoot two in one day. I waited until my turkey stop flopping before making my way over. Got to my turkey and took a good luck and he had a 4 inch beard on him. How cool was that! So at the end, what started off as a great family day also turned out to be an awesome turkey hunt.

My phone was dead so I had to wait to get home to get some pictures taken. My son was too afraid to pose with me so here I am. Enjoy the picture.

Way to go. :good:
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

Thanks for fixing my post John. Oh and Braz, the turkey is not on a pillow. His head is resting on the bag that I stuffed him in for the drive home. LOL Didn't want any blood on the floor.

You are one lucky dude and not because you scored a great bird, just read the Fish and Game articile in our local paper (edited length):

Watch out for wild turkeys

By Department of Fish and Game
From page B1 | November 14, 2012 | 2 Comments

With shorter days and a chilly nip in the air, we know fall has arrived and winter is not too far off. As the season changes, so do the habits of wildlife. Bears stock up on calories for winter hibernation, birds migrate to warmer climates and wild turkeys seem to come out in droves.

While these wild game birds may seem harmless and approachable, they can cause problems. Many homeowners can’t resist feeding them. What starts out as innocent fun can become a nuisance if the birds start destroying flower and vegetable gardens, leaving their droppings on
patios and decks or roosting on cars where they may scratch the paint.

This time of year, Department of Fish and Game (DFG) typically sees an increase in complaints about nuisance wild turkeys. DFG recommends the following:

- If confronted by a wild turkey behaving aggressively, slowly back away.

Guess our F&G forgot about shotguns!!.. :rofl2:

That's funny stuff. I guess that's why they call em "wild".

Good job on fetching that gobbler.

You're gonna want to slow cook those legs.

LOL. Slow cooked the legs til the meat fell off and boy was it good. I cooked it the next day and the family consumed the whole thing the night. Now, I have to find time to go back to find another bird.
