Hey ALL,

I was told I would need a bullet proof vest and a bunker for D11. lol

It was my first year hunting Mule Deer...ever. With the stats posted by DFG My plan was to just get a year in the books and figure out what I needed and maybe learn a thing or two.

Went out opening morning early sat down and got situated on a ridge. Immediately heard something on the opposing side of the canyon making all sorts of noises tromping through bushes...Oh great Duck for cover! Bang Bang Bang...Just kidding.

It was still not quite light enough to see anything so i figured it was another hunter which wasn't a comforting thought. Thing is, the noise continued and was working its up the canyon and started to slightly fade.

All of a sudden the noise starts to get louder and sounds like it was up the ridge that I was on. This weird noise that sounded like a really weird goose rang out a few times about 5 minutes apart..."that's a weird sounding bird." I figure Its light enough now to start glassing.

I pull out my binos and go to work in that direction. Immediately I spot a large animal body outline come strait down the ridge towards me!!! My heart was out of my chest. I got myself together quickly Guessing it was probably a doe.

I check my watch and we are good to go time wise for hunting season. Look up deer is gone... crap. there is a small rise between me and where it was coming towards me so I figure maybe thats where it is...

I get out my shooting stick and set my Weatherby 270wsm on top on top of it. I'm Ready for anything. Next thing I know i see some big ears poking up over the rise coming strait towards me! Antlers!!! Get The buck in my scope...Hes coming in HOT. Verify his forks. Line my cross hairs up on his chest and let it Rip.

I recover from the recoil and look up to see the Buck about 10 ft in the air. He landed on his side and didn't move. "I shot A freaking deer!!!"

I Will always remember this one. What a blast. Right place right time.

He was a smaller buck little forky but for my first deer, my expectations, and It being D11 I was thrilled. The shot ended up being 30 yards give or take a couple (measured with my redfield raider550 after the shot).

Its brown and legal and like i tell everyone your first deer doesnt have to be a bruiser like on tv, it just needs to be legal to make a great meal and an even better story. Some people dont know how they will react until it happens and the first one always seperates the men from the mice.

Great job man, right place at the right time.

Good job Sean,
There is nothing wrong with a forkie,
Infact he has four more points than the deer I didn't get this year.
It seems like deer hunting public land in California gets worse every year.

You make yours with a jerky gun? Or just cut strips?

Great buck and great story!!! Congratulations!
Now, don't try to get away! I am more muscular, more cunning, faster, and larger than you are, and I am a genius. Why you could hardly pass the entrance examinations to kindergarten.

Just strips. My kids finish it before I can even get my hands on it.

Great story. Congratulations.
It's not about how many, it's about how.
Life is too short to hunt with an ugly dog or gun

Maintain a balance of nature, use a beautiful gun when shooting a beautiful bird

Cut medallions out of the backstraps. Get a sealable bag and put them in. Pour wine in the bag with some crushed garlic, finely chopped rosemary and some olive oil Marinate for about 4 hours. Get the grill hot. Sear for about 3 minutes per side depending on thickness.

I'm drooling....

Hey thats great. And you herd him barking. You can make that barking sound with any rabbit or deer call . It will bring in deer . in my case just fawns and does . Bucks never show when im deer hunting. Good shooting and great little buck. :good:
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.
