Found a nice road kill fox, fur is in great shape. called F&G and got recording. I want this fox.... but they're not in season yet... how does it work for road kill predators? did I mention I want this fox... super clean and super furry, best I have ever seen in years.

It is illegal to pick up roadkill wildlife in California. No one may possess wildlife in any form unless the animal was legally taken by a licensed hunter during the hunting season for that species and while using approved harvest methods.

Thats the rule but if you calland get a hold of a representative, tell them the situation and where the carcas is located tehy will sometimes give you the ok to take the fur. This has happened to a friend i know in the same situation, fox road kill but out of season. He called told them where he found it and they said if he properly disposes of the carcas he can have it. They just needed to know the location of the carcas, sex, and species.

Sometimes a kind word goes a long way and a please and thank you sometimes open doors.

Get it in writing from whoever you talk to. Most people that answer the phone at DFG don't know what they are talking about. You had better have a Scientific Collection Permit if you pick up any road kill read that link I posted above it's pretty specific.
