Last night, in the last few minutes of the D5 season, I was out driving around looking for a reasonable place to discard guts when my phone rang. It was my buddy. His son had just got a "huge" buck and he needed help with it. I was almost close enought that I should have heard the shot so I jammed over there.

He wasn't exagerating. The buck was 4x4 and fat as a hog. Really big by our D5 foothill standards. Both of us could barely lift it into the back of his truck! As I grabbed the back legs, I noticed there was no hoof on one of them. After we got it hung it up, a closer examination of the rear leg revealed that deer had been walking on it's leg bone for a very long time. The hoof was gone and so was the flesh about 2 inches up the bone. The bone was exposed and it was clean and dry. Any appearance of infection appeared to be long gone! It was crazy. I took pictures but I surf from my smartphone and despite many tries, I've never been able to upload photos to this forum...

The only thing we could figure out is that the buck had found a VERY happy place to recover after sustaining his injury, like right under an automatic feeder or something. And that kind of makes sense because my buddy has a neighbor that HATES his hunting so she feeds the deer to keep them on her prooperty. Despite his injury this thing had a very healthy fat layer. We joked that he should send her a thank you note. But then we decided better of that idea!

Its amazing how animals adapt. Coyotes get shot and until the hunter gets there he has no idea that its only a 3 legged critter. Did you get any pics? That would be an interesting Deer to see ! Congrats to you friend on a Buck!

I just got of the phone with my buddy. He said he let his son cut school to go with him this morning to take it to the butcher. The son, who shot the buck, is 12 years old. I asked him if he took his son out for beers after they dropped it off? My buddy replied, "He wanted shots."

Hahaha......

Email them to yourself then upload them to photobucket.
Now, don't try to get away! I am more muscular, more cunning, faster, and larger than you are, and I am a genius. Why you could hardly pass the entrance examinations to kindergarten.
