Had a great and fun trip with my buddy Edwin this weekend. I just got home and was tired to un pack everything. Here is the short report.
Saturday opening day. Arrived at our spot at 6ish. Sun was barly sneak out from the hill and it was cool.

We begin walk into hunting ground . Spent 3 hours searching around but only manage to see and shot 2 cotton tails. Not even one bird in sight.
What a different from last year. We went back to camp and have our lunch. take a short nap and went on to other spot on the hil. As soon as we arrived at our hunting ground. We saw at least 20~30 running away into bushes. We chasing after them and I got 3 from the group and Edwin got 4. Nice..
we end up had our limit in 2 hours and arrive at camp to do some cat fishing at night.

Edwin's dad caught a huge 7 Lbs kitty

Sunday morning. Received the call my our friend Kevin that he knew where the birds went and we decided to give it a try to the same spot. We had 4 in our group and start working on the ground before sun rise.

in less than 10 mins of search we found a small group of quails and follow them up to the hill. Shot a couple of time and bag 2. We circle around and a big covey around 30 or more was right in the center of our group. The chase is on and by 9ish. I had bag 9. Edwin.Kewin and Mike got their limit. What a fun trip.

They are harder to find this year compare to last season. We plan to go back out next following week to have some more fun.

Ken
Great hunt. I hope the rest of the season turns out as well as your first weekend. Western Bird magazine painted a gloomy outlook for CA quail and chukar.

I also had a great weekend. Good mix of bob white and california quail. Went fishing also, but got skunked! Glad you had a good time!

Great job on the quail.

I also went out this weekend but I didn't happen to connect on either of my two shots. However, my companions bagged 5. I noticed the quail in the area I went were real shy about calling, I didn't hear them until around 10AM and very sporadically throughout the day.

Wow! You guys did great Ken! Great pictures too. :good:

I went out to a spot where I had been seeing and hearing lots of them for weeks and didn't end up seeing or hearing any quail. Ended up with a cottontail and a jack rabbit though. Maybe next time. ;)

Those quail look tasty. I might chase some birds later this year. Hopefully I do as well as you do. Congrats.

Talked to a friend at the range who had spoken with some guys that went to Red Mountain. No birds...nada. They didn't get one bird between 4 guys in a few days on the hill. Another friend that doesn't hunt but knows the Red Mtn/Randsburg locals says that the birds are all in the town drinkin and eatin. The locals, being desert hermit types that checked out of society, don't like the masses of hunters, especially since their homes get shot up on occasion. I guess that's what makes the world go around. Anyway, Red Mtn sounds like it's a bust.
