I will be shooting the 308 for the 600 yards night shoot and the 338 Lapua Ackley Improved for the 1K shoot on Sunday. My wife will be shooting the 6.5-47 Lapua on both events

Ammo were all loaded. More than we need, but it's better to have extra for practice.



Rifles were all checked to make sure everything is tight and barrel scrubbed and clean.

Just curious, what is the magnification you use for those distances?

The IOR on my 308 maxed at 18X. The MK IV on my 6.5-47 has 20 and the NXS on the 338 Lapua Ackley has 22.

You can use as low as 10X in a 1K shoot.

No, not at all top secret Sean.

For my 308 Winchester, I found a good load using 178 grain A-Max. My bread and butter load with this rifle is the 155 grain Lapua Scenar, stoked with 43 grains of Varget. The velocity was a tad over 2,900 fps. Very accurate load but I'm not satisfied with my result the last time I used it at 1K. I think The 178 A-Max will perform better and I'm debating whether I will use this rifle for the 1K shoot. But with championship on the line, I will banked with my 338 Lapua Ackley and it's 300 grain Sierra Match King load. At 2,850 fps, the 338-300 grain SMK will be hard to beat, especially on a windy day.

For my wife's 6.5-47 Lapua, the load is consist of 130 grain Berger Match VLD at 2,906 fps propelled by 41 grains of H-4350. She will be in the non Magnum category in the 1K shoot. She will be up against guys shooting 6 Dasher, 6XC, 6.5-284, 308, 30-06 and probably a couple of 243's.

Thanks for sharing. I'm thinking of just going to check it out spectate and see what its like. I've never shot past 400 yards but am interested in the 600 yard shoot sometime in the future. Do you guys have these matches frequently?

Sean, we only shoot the 600 maybe twice a season and at night when it's very hot. We have a monthly precision bolt rifle match at WEGC.

Oh I'm in canyon country/ santa clarita area....off the 14. My parents live in Rancho though so I Frequent the area on some weekends. I know roughly where the WEGC is but haven't been there.

Very interesting stuff man, thanks for sharing. I want to shoot some long range steel with my 243, it does 1/2" groups with Federal Premium 70 gr ballistic tips. I'd be doing it for fun, but do you think that load would be okay, or should I go up in bullet weight? If you get a chance check out my thread "My Weatherby's Home". I've listed some specs on my rifle.

Chuck, the 70 grain V-Max will be a good bullet for long range varminting but a poor choice for long range 600 yards competition. If your 243 has a 9 twist barrel, you can load some of the 105 grain A-Max at over 3000 fps and you're good to go.
I'm currently in a process of building a 6 BR for my wife and the 105 A-Max will be my bullet of choice for this rifle. They're inexpensive and very accurate bullet.

Thanx, sorry for the hijack. IDK what the twist is on it, I'd imagine 1:9 is common for a 243 deer rifle? That's basically what it is, I shoot.100 gr for deer and 70 for critters.

The most common twist on a factory 243 rifle is 10 which is good for bullet weight up to 100 grain. Not sure if it's enough for the 105's.

way too far south for me :/ closest 1k range here is in Sacramento. Would love to go and watch. I've never shot out to 1000. Would love to though for sure. Looking into a long range shooter. Just not sure what I want.

I would like to get my Winch 57' that was re-barreled to .308 on paper @ 600 yrds but most matches require in prone . I can't do that . Was looking at WEGC match but can I shoot if not prone ? I don't care about " winning " match , just wanna see what my gun & ammo can do @ 600 yrds .

Andy, you don't need to enter the match just to see how your rifle will do at 600 yards. You can go to any range that has 600 yards shooting facility and shoot. We have them at WEGC. It's open on Tuesday to members and their guest only. PM me you phone number and I let you know when i will be able to go.
