Headed out Saturday morning early to try and find a buck. Got to our spot, parked and walked about 200yds before turning into the woods. Made our way up a game trail to the top of a high bench that over-looked the road where we knew the deer were crossing. I posted up over the game trail. My buddy went across the area to watch up hill. 15min. goes by, I hear a stick snap and a pinecone fall. Nothing to get excited about, but just keep in mind. 2min. later, out walks a bear!! Not a little one either, he's big. I drew down on him, as he took a couple more steps. I settled the cross-hairs on his shoulder he stopped , never knowing I was less than 25yds. above him. Click went the saftey, BOOM, my .270 barked!! He spun around 3X, like something had just bite him, biting and clawing at his shoulder. Just then he lifted his head , as to run down into the forest, BOOM, I shot again! I'm not chasing a wounded bear into heavy cover!! He dropped and was done!! My buddy came down and said he heard both shots hit home. I was all excited as this was my 1st bear and knew it was big. Got down to it, checked for life, then filled tag out and gutted. I was able to drive truck down road to within 30yds. of it. Good thing too cause it was an honest 325lbs! Got back to cabin skinned and hung bear, then went back out for an evening hunt. No deer this trip but plenty of excitment!! Planning on getting a rug for the wall, European scull mount for the coffee table and plenty of meat for the freezer.
Surprize !!, not a deer.

The 30 yard drag is awesome, especially
if you are as old as I am.
I will be leaving for d-6 on Thursday morning.
I have a bear tag, and a archery only tag,
so my hopes are to tag a bear with an arrow.

Great read and congratulations. Were you able to recover the bullets?
YES! I was skinning the off-side shoulder and found the 150gr. Winchester soft-point. It was just under the skin. I will post up a pic when I get back after next weekend, forgot it at cabin when we left.
