Hello,

A little background, I am a longtime CA resident, with just a few pheasant hunting trips when I was young. Left to go live in Montana for a while, became a hunter of deer and elk there. Wife required a move back to CA. My son and I would like to get into upland game bird, namely turkey, here in CA. (something I would like to pass on to the other 4 sons as they get old enough as well) Reading all about it does not quite do it, I need someone willing to jumpstart us.

I am a happy, non drinking, no drugs, down to earth kind of guy with a very good sense of humor, my son is the same. We are willing to tag along, no guns just to see how it done, If that is what is wanted. We just don't know anyone that is hunting and would like to get out there.

man that sounded like a personal add...

Oh well. If you are willing to teach (and take home a case of beer or two, or maybe some steaks,) I am willing to learn!

Jared

Welcome. Most of us are not here to make cash from hunting. Most of us are willing to help out though. Accepting cash (Acting as a Paid Guide) is illegal without being a Licensed Guide. Wording it differently like offering to pay for lunch and gas sounds better.

Exactly Dave. lol I work for beer or what ever. Turkeys I don't hunt so I can't help you, but if you want to shoot squeeks(Beldings Ground Squirrels) I can help you with that. Ed

Ok! I will pay for gas, beer, lunch and dinner!

Modoc, if you are willing, I would be more than happy to pay for a case of beer and then some to let my son turn some ground squirrels into memories! Before we had to move back from montana, we had just frozen up some deer trimmings to bait for coyotes, but we never had a chance to go together and he was very disappointed.

Jared, shoot me a PM around mid Febuary. Squeeks are usally starting to come up by then. Read the posts in the varmint section you can get an idea on what to use and what to expect. Ed

Jared,
Good advice from Ed (Modoc) on checking out the varmint section here. I went squeek shooting twice this year and can't wait to go again in early spring. Already stocking up on .17 HMR, .223 and .22-250 ammo. Beer, lunch or dinner is good but don't offer to carry Ed's guns and ammo! He takes six or eight rifles every time he goes and I couldn't guess how many rounds of ammo....... hundreds for sure!

I give him more credit than that. I would be willing it is more like hundreds of rounds for each rifle :good:
Always bring a spare for your spare, in case that spare for the other spare goes out and you need a spare :signs684mh:

Oh ya, I always stock up on the sales for the .17, the 223. Am thinking about picking up a 22 mag as well.

If I was closer I'd take you turkey hunting. I venture that way some times and maybe might be able to have you guys tag along.Turkey hunting is the one thing for thats like crack. Im hooked for life and cant shake it,girlfriend hates me during the spring. Like a lot of ole timers say, "If you have a wife/girlfriend,friends,a job,be papaired to lose them to turkey hunting". God I wish spring was here already. I sure miss the sound of a gobble on a cool spring morning.

Not sure if you're looking for a guide, or whatever, but there's a guy on the forum here- BigBoarStopper who guides on 3 ranches for hogs mostly- but also quail and turkey. Last time I was on a hog hunt with him, we saw lots of turkeys. You might look him up- because he'll book up quick, if he's not already all booked for turkey.
