My son has his first deer tag. I'm posting from our hide with my phone. A little buck just limped into our field of fire. Right now my son is dry firing on him. It appears his right front leg is messed up.

Would you take this deer?

(I posted to the members forum instead of the big game forum on purpose so the psychos don't see any debate.)

I was worried about the meat being messed up but now that I've had time to think it thru, I think we are gonna take it if it comes back.

I figure his range might not be that far, making odds good he'll be back. My pasture offers a creek and green grass...... I put a target out there for my son to practice on and the thing was standing right in front of it at one point!

Well in that case next time run out there and stick an orange dot on him for your son to have a point of aim. I use to tease a good friend that I had to do that for him or he would not be able to hit the deer. He passed away and was a good hunting buddy.

Absolutely, I would have shot it,

It was going to die anyway.

I don't like to see animals suffer.

As long as it is a legal buck I would take it. Sons first deer and not let it suffer. You can't lose.

He didn't come back this evening. Now I'm wondering if he had already been shot.

Bummer. Hate to see an animal like that. I sure would have put it down, knowing that it was legal.

I agree with the rest. I would have shot him. It is a shame to leave an animal to suffer especially if he had been shot already.
Now, don't try to get away! I am more muscular, more cunning, faster, and larger than you are, and I am a genius. Why you could hardly pass the entrance examinations to kindergarten.

Your first deer doesnt need to be a wall hanger. If it brown and legal its going down, Coupled with an injury its a learning lesson wraped in a nice bundle. But to each his own. But in my book not every animal needs to be a bruiser.
