Get some topo maps of the area you will be hunting and start planning you route, Look for water sources and fields.
Start prepping your gear and get you weapon Zeroed in.

Good Luck

Is this the only Elk hunt in that area of 395? If so, my brother in law hunted it and he said to go a day or 2 early, spot them on ranchers fields grazing in the evenings and get permission to hunt their land. He said it is like Alturas/ Cedarville squeek shooting, farmers hate the Elk and want you to kill them on their land. He said he had to get folks to flush them and make them move, they were like cattle and knew how to hide where hunters couldn't go. I think the first day it is paramount to not pass up an opportunity to fill a tag as they get wise fast, although I am sure scouting tips them off too.

Most of the elk that are killed on that hunt are very near the Alabama Gates (might be labeled Alabama Hills on the map). The elk tend to hang out right down along the river bottom. You should have no problem finding the elk! Let me know if you need any more specific info. My dad drew one of the two bull tags back in 2002. He shot a nice 6x6.
