Hello guys, with the opener for D8 yesterday my father, brother and myself went up to Lake Isabella, saw some amazing scenery but no deer while hunting, only the day before when we saw a doe and when we were leaving just lounging on private property. We had two rifles that were't shooting either to make things worse.

My thinking though is that if we do see a deer when we go back I'd rather have the option to shoot it regardless of sex so is there a tag that allows that? I'm not the type to hunt to have something to mount on the wall, I'm just looking for some good clean meat that I slaughtered myself so don't care for bucks beside's being bigger as they get older.

Nope, except for a few doe hunts in very restrictive zones all the tags are for "Antlered deer".

I don't think there are very many either sex deer tags in California.

There are no either sex deer tags for D-8.

There may be some Special Hunts for archery and Junior hunts where either sex may be taken. If there is they would all be taken in the drawing that took place on June 2nd 2012.

You need to get the Big Game Regulations for California and start reading and learning so you will know what may be available for 2013.

Wow that's too bad. Is this the general practice in every state or just California? I'm a bit confused with tags as some people say drawings but all I did was go to Big 5 and just paid for my tag, didn't have to enter into any raffle.

Some tags are "Premium Tags" and you have to enter the drawing to see if you can get one. Other tags are "Over the Counter" and you can just buy them at sporting goods stores as long as they are not sold out.
Like said before, Either Sex, or Antlerless tags are typically Premium tags and are usually Archery, Muzzle loader, or Junior tags.
Get the "Big Game Digest" and read up on tag definitions and zones.
here is a link to the pdf of the digest
http://dfg.ca.gov/publications/digest/

Every state has different regulations for hunting. Cali for some reason is very against killing does, where most other states encourage it. (its county by county here in CA)
In South Dakota, as a Non-resident, I can buy 2 doe tags for cheaper than my 2 Resident tags here in CA. In SD I'm pretty much guaranteed to come home with a cooler full of meat.

My grandson has drew either sex tags for the last 3 years in an apprentice hunt that is basically D3. He applies for it on his second deer tag. This is the last year he can hunt as he will be 16 by next season. Think there are around 75 permits and are never filled. So if any of you have kids you should look into these apprentice hunts. Ed
