I'm woundering if someone could point me in the right direction for a good bear hunt around the d8 area. This will be my first year bear hunting and it is hard for me to do a lot of scouting due to being 18 years old and still in high school and money is kinda tight...I'm not asking for secret spots just a good area where I wouldn't be wasting my time..

Take a look at this website for some info

National forest maps are a good idea and so is google earth. Dont forget the bear hunting regulations either.

My advise is that early morning around 4-5am lots of bear will cross dirt roads (wink)...now its your job to research why they cross during that time!

Im new to the D8 zone but the few times I have been up there to scout I have seen numerous bear. I Have been going up above Porterville on highway 190. I see your from Bakersfield so that may be a little far. But I have heard of guys getting lucky in the Kern River and Johnsondale area that might be a little closer for you.
I understand about the whole in school and outta money thing, this is my first year out of college and its nice to have some time and some extra change in my pocket. But hang in there!

since you are in Bako you can buy very good FS and BLM maps at the BLM Office near Hwy165 & Pegasus Road... I think the maps are $4 each... the "Sequoia National Forest" map is excellent, but it is not topo

Buy a Sequoia National Forrest map at a Ranger Station or NF fire station. They are pretty good about having Dirt Roads, Hiking Trails, Locked and Seasonal Gates, Campgrounds, etc. Or you can buy one online here http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia/maps/
Call me old school, but I like a good detailed PAPER map. GPS and Smart Phones are cool, but batteries can die or they can lose a signal etc
