Ed (Tawnoper) and I headed out Tuesday night to hunt the dark moon. The plan was to hunt for two days and return Thursday evening. We also wanted to try out Ed's new two-bulb hunting light.

At midnight we pulled off to a spot we call Blindman's kitty and made our first night stand. Ed was on the Critter Call and the light. About ten minutes in he spots eyes coming in quick. The animal crosses in front of us and then checks up facing us at about sixty yards. Ed lights it up and I drop it with the .204. The first stand of the 2012-1213 season.

We decided to put some miles on before the next stand. At 3:00 AM, Ed starts in again with the Critter Call. On this stand we decide to use the new prototype light. The light has two bulbs, one wide, low intensity flood light to use when searching for eyes, and a focused, high intensity bulb to burn the animal for the shot. Flipping a toggle switch switches power between the two bulbs.

After about five minutes, Ed spots eyes. The animal again crosses in front of us and heads left. I dont immediately spot it, but under the low flood light, I catch movement in the sage. I pull in front of the moving animal and Ed burns it. I was greeted with a perfect profile coyote looking over his shoulder. The .204 put number two in the dirt. I can say this, if I had been hunting under a red light, we wouldn't have killed that coyote. I never would have spotted it.

We catch some rest in the truck from about 4-7. After a hearty breakfast, we head into the sierras for a little fishing. Ed pulled out the fly rod and I grabbed the spinning reel. After an hour or so, I caught a cat nap in the truck. I was suffering through a bit of a head ache and needed some rest.

After the trout, we head out to look for some high elevation, cooler calling areas. We find a nice looking spot and we get set up. I pull out a brand new, never been used, Dan Thompson call I ordered the day I heard he passed away. Ed decided to try and film this stand. After about ten minutes of calling, Ed spots a hard charger. He tries to point it out, but for the life of me, I can't see it coming. It checks up at about 125 yards and I finally see it. Too late, Ed drops with a good shot.

Number three for the trip

After number three, I start feeling pretty out of it. The head ache is pounding and I feel like I have some serious allergies. After some quickly purchased medicine we make another stand and have another coyote come in but spot the truck and head out. The next stand had me almost passing out in the heat and I knew I was done. I was obviously in the throws of a pretty serious cold. We decided to call it and five hours later I was sleeping it off at home. I was beyond bummed to end it a day early, but I didn't see making it through another day of calling and surviving.

Ed, thanks for calling it...it is much appreciated.

Check out Ed's video of the trip. There is a great clip of the light we used.

Hey man, glad you're feeling better! You were looking pretty rough there...but still wanted to hunt.

Cool write up. Really fun for a 24hr sprint.

Yeah, I'm happy how the light works...now I'm going to tune up a few things on it and make a few more. A little different handle and anodize it black. Although I like the toggle I found one a little smaller I'm going to try out.

Lets go again when it cools off. Hate the heat.

Congrats on a great hunt, pics & video guys... always nice when things come together, including the new light.

Too bad on getting sick, but of course we cannot control that. We do not care much about anything when feeling miserable. Hope your better soon.

I'm feeling a lot better. The worst of it appears to have hit that evening we headed home. It was crazy how quickly it came on. Still a great hunt and a good time.

You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

Those are still fun to catch Ed. The stream looks good too. As a kid I fished an county water ditch in Nevada County with a family friend. The fish were never big with a few exceptions but there were plenty of them. It's all about the thrill of the catch. I'll tell you how long ago it was we used bamboo fly rods.

Bamboo huh...you must of been rich lol. I started with an old Fenwick fiberglass rod that my dad used throughout the 60's

All my flyrods I own are graphite.

Bamboo rods nowadays are sought after...someday when I'm rich I'll own one. They usually start around 3k for a nice bamboo rod.

My aunt who raised me had bamboo rods built for her and her husband who went missing in action in Korea. So I inherited his rods when I was old enough to take care of them. She taught me to fly fish and that was my first fishing rod. I didn't learn to use a spinning setup until I joined the Boy Scouts.

John, If those bamboo fly rods your aunt had built were Powells and they might have been, since he was from Marysville, they would be worth a lot of money now. Hope you still have them, Ed

I still have them packed away out in the barn. They are still inside of their custom wooden boxes that they came in. I haven't even had them out for over 30 years. I should dig them out and have a look at them again. When I got a fiberglass fly rod I thought it was better being a kid bamboo seemed old fashioned.

You're a real pal there Ed. I was aware they may be worth some money but because I inherited them and learned to fish with them they have special sentimental value.
