My girl had been wanting to come on a hunt with me and she'd been putting in some time at the range so I figuered I could take her with me yesterday morning to try and get a coyote or two. Getting to our spot was a hell of a hike but we made it just about 10 or 15 minutes after sunrise. I decided to make our first stand on the eastern slope of a little valley that ran sort of north/south. I was covering the north side with my scout 30-30, she faced the south holding my AR-15. We setup about 20 yards apart, each sitting up against some brush to hide ouselves. I started calling on and off for about 10 minutes. I get nothing. I slowly look back at my girl and she's still looking scanning straight ahead, covering her zone. I call for another 5 minutes and then wait for a few before I decide to call it quits. Still nothing. I get up, walk over to where she's sitting, and immediatly see a huge coyote standing straight ahead, not ever 100 yards out! I'm fubling to get my rifle unslung and pop the lens covers on the scope again but he obviously see's me too because he flips around over a ridge top barking and howling the whole time like he's laughing at us! I see him again coming over the next hill but now he's probably 500 yards out. We can still hear him howling for about 15 minutes after he dissapeared from sight probably telling the whole neighborhood where we're at.

He was right in front of her and she never saw the coyote the whole time! At least I have something to tease her about.

That happens a lot they hang up and you don't see them tell you get up.That's why i learned from trial and error to try and be elevated a little when I set up to call.I don't use scope cover it's just another thing to get in the way.
good luck next time out.

Why were you sitting so far apart?

Next time use her as a spotter and stay together, 2 pairs of eyes is better than 1. You can spot for her and vise versa.

Well I figured we would face opposite directions because honestly both sides, north and south, looked ideal for a coyote to approach from. The hillside from where we made our stand had a draw right there so I was on one edge and she was on the other. I hope I'm explaining that in a way you guys understand. Cover was pretty sparse right there so I picked those spots because we would be a little elevated and could use the brush to help hide ourselves. But when I got up and walked to her I had to walk down into the small draw and then up to her. I couldn't see the coyote till I came back up over the little ridge but that gave me away.

You're right though, next time stick together.

Hey, it happens... busted stands! A LOT (as Shoot-it pointed out). Just goes with the sport, and can't win them all... or even close to winning them all. I always like to say the best hitters in MLB only hit 30% of the time (as an analogy).

20 yards apart may, or may not, be too far apart at all... Just depends on lay of terrain, vegetation etc (on how we set up). Lots of ways to set up on a stand. Back to back etc! Covering both sides of a ridge is an excellent idea IMO. AND as Grant stated, you did have success &/or called it correctly. Just didn't close the deal is all. So you did Good! :good:

And there will be other times that no matter what we do, it won't be right. Just cannot win sometimes, & is part of why we keep coming back, eh?! LOL

Keep up the good work, and keep us posted

No one said a word about calling her your old lady,
but on the other post everyone got upset about being called an old geezer.
What is up with that?
On the other hand, It is still nice, to have your wife, or girlfriend out hunting with you.

Lol Loop I wouldn't dare call any female that, my dad would have rattled my head if he heard that. I know it is a term of endearment to some, but to me it is disrespectful of one of the finer things in life. Just my thoughts. Congrats on your hunt. Killing something is not what it is all about. Ed

No truer words were ever spoke. It is a breath of fresh air to hear someone (else) say it, thanks Ed.
You had a great time, called one in, learned something, and most importantly you took a new hunter. How could it get too much better than that? Good job.

Didn't mean to offend anyone. Its more like a joke for us when we say it since we're both still in our 20's. I was just giving her a hard time about her eyesight must be going with her age and such since she didn't see the coyote right in front of her. Again, no disrespect intended to anyone.

She did enjoy the hunt though. I'm gonna hafta get her her own rifle pretty soon.
