Went out to the High Desert with the wife Friday morning, and got a couple jacks. I used the slow stalking method on both by approaching them from the west as the sun was just over the horizon from the east. The area has some pretty dense Joshua tree areas, however I was able to find a nice large clearing with a few bushes here and there for a long line of sight. I also spotted alot of scat in the area. The first jack bolted about 40 yards in front of me and stopped about 90 yards out. I used my binoculars to spot the ears sticking up over the brush. I slowly approached it, and got to about 60 yards from it at which point I could see the top of the head through the brush. I set my .25 Marauder on my shooting sticks, knelt down and took the shot. Hit it right at the base of the ear between the eye and ear. It actually ran and chicken danced about 15 feet from where I shot it, and then expired. The second one I took at around 45 yards with the same shot placement. This one dropped right on the spot though, and just kicked a little before expiring. Only got two, and did alot of walking, but had a blast. Seen about four other Jacks, but they bolted to the next county. My wife usually tags along just for the exercise and scenery. Got both jacks in the freezer, and plan on slow cooking them in a couple weeks.

Nice shooting ! I also went out yesterday at my friends property in the High Desert for some jacks to test out a new barrel w/ my .25 Marauder but they wanted no part of me. They know of my intentions lol. I did manage to shoot 2 with my camera though. Right when i would put my gun on my shooting sticks they would hit the afterburners and would be gone..

Cool stuff. :good:
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

Good job on the jacks. Don't see a lot of them up here, not like in the central valley. Ed

Thanks Ornery, Modoc, Thumper, and Rws. Rws hey at least you were able to get a cam shot of them out in the open. All my shots I had to take on them when they were behind a bush with their head partially exposed. Whenever I try to get a visual of their whole body at my shooting distance less than 60 yards, they bolt. So i just creep up close as i can and at the angle where they are partially exposed.

I headed out yesterday to the high desert and got 1 cottontail and a couple of jacks. All shots were between 40 yards and 70 yards. However I was using a Ruger 77/22 so I don't need as much skill as you air gunners. Most of the rabbits I saw were sitting in the shade of the bush. I'll see if I can post some pics after work tonight

Great pics and story. It sounds like you had a great time. I went out on Sunday, Sept. 2nd, and bagged two jacks and one cottontail. It was hard to get even those using my .25 Marauder. Even the slightest "crunch" sound would send jack rabbits and cottontails that were still a good 40 to 50 yards or more away from me running for the next county. It was still fun as always.

Once again, great pics and story and great shooting with that .25 Marauder. :good:

Thanks air rifle hunter, nice to see others bagging them with a marauder.

Truetothyself - Regardless if you are using a .22 I know it's still hard to get within the 40 to 70 yards that you are able to stalk them at. Good job on bagging the 3 that you got.

Good hunting! I love Rabbit hunting. Its fun to beat the bush and get them to flush. I went out a couple weeks ago and got two cotton tails.
