General season, you can use Bow, crossbow, or rifle. (lead free ammo)
During the archery season you can use a bow, (compound, recurve, or long bow) No crossbow, no gun. also you can not have a gun in possition while hunting
Archery 8-19-12 9-9-12
General (gun) 9-12-12 10-21-12
Hope this helps.

D8 Archery Aug 18-Sep 9, General Sep 22-Oct 21 (4th saturday, 30-day season)
You CANNOT use your crossbow during archery season unless you have a disabled permit. So for you (not having a bow), means YOU can start hunting Sep 22 with either rifle or crossbow. Feel free to go up and scout, just cant shoot a deer til General season opens
I told the sales clerk at big 5 what I planned to be hunting with and she suggested I get D8 but after getting that printout I'm worried she may have given me the wrong place as I don't have a bow, only a crossbow and rifle which is what I was hoping to use.
Lesson; People working at sporting goods stores dont know jack haha

There is a California Penal Code law that allows anglers to carry a gun while fishing and while hiking to and from their angling site. California Penal Code, section 12025 prohibits carrying concealed firearms in California, however, section 12027 provides the following exemption to this prohibition: “Licensed hunters or fishermen carrying pistols, revolvers or other firearms capable of being concealed upon the person while engaged in hunting or fishing, or transporting those firearms unloaded when going to or returning from the hunting or fishing expedition.” Remember that some areas that allow fishing, such as state and national parks, and some incorporated areas where fishing is allowed prohibit the possession of any firearm. Make sure to check on the local laws where you plan to fish. The California Bureau of Firearms in the Department of Justice posts a summary of California firearm laws online at http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/.

You don't need an exception to the loaded gun law when you lawfully hunt, because you are not in a "prohibited area" where it's illegal to shoot a gun, and therefore the loaded gun law doesn't apply. However, you cannot have a loaded gun in or on your vehicle while it's on any public road or highway, even when you're hunting.
It references Penal Code SS 12027(g),
Yes your right it does not say anything about BEARS but here ya go I have talked to fish and game. When you conceal carry in a area with bears you can argue that you have it for personal protection.
I dont see anything that says you cant conceal carry in archery season in SS12027 (g)
If you dont think I am right or just want to know for your self call fish and game and ask for a watch commander and ask him if you can have a handgun for personal protection during archery season
The key to this arguement is personal protection!!

Dont have to look for a penal code or call any watch commander. It is in the F&G code.
§354. Archery Equipment and Crossbow Regulations.
(h) Except as provided in subsection 353(g), archers may not possess a firearm while hunting in the field during any archery season, or while hunting during a general season under the provisions of an archery only tag.
