You can use a crossbow during the regular deer season not during archery. As for the rifle again during the regular deer season and you must use non lead ammo as it states on the tag. Carry a pen to fill out your tag, pencils are not allowed and attach the tag to the deers antler immediately upon killing it.

That's where I'm confused, would the season starting on 9/9 be a regular deer season in D8 or archery? I told the sales clerk at big 5 what I planned to be hunting with and she suggested I get D8 but after getting that printout I'm worried she may have given me the wrong place as I don't have a bow, only a crossbow and rifle which is what I was hoping to use.

Look at the regulations and see when the rifle season opens. That is when you can hunt with a crossbow or rifle. You cannot hunt the archery season with what you have. I checked The rifle/crossbow season is Sept 22 thru Oct 21. You CANNOT hunt the archery season which is Aug 18 thru Sept 9

so does that tag mean I can hunt in either rifle or bow season? I could have sworn the book I have at home says the deer season starts on 9/9, but I'll double check it when I get back later today.

Maybe this will help, I know you have read the regs.
General season, you can use Bow, crossbow, or rifle. (lead free ammo)
During the archery season you can use a bow, (compound, recurve, or long bow) No crossbow, no gun. also you can not have a gun in possition while hunting
Archery 8-19-12 9-9-12
General (gun) 9-12-12 10-21-12

Hope this helps.

You can't hunt archery with your crossbow! You can only use it during rifle season. Your rifle ammo must have non lead bullets. Here is the regulation and date for D*:

Zone D-8.

  • ( A ) Area: In those portions of Fresno, Kern and Tulare counties within a line beginning at the intersection of Highway 99 and the Kings River; upstream and northeast along the Kings River through Reedley, Piedra and Pine Flat Reservoir to the junction of the Middle and South Forks of the Kings River; northeast along the Middle Fork Kings River to the Dusy Basin Trail; east along this trail to the Kings Canyon National Park boundary at Bishop Pass; south along the Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park boundaries to the Main Kern River; southeast along the Main Kern River and the common boundary between the Inyo and Sequoia National Forests to the end of the Chimney Meadow-Blackrock Station Road (Forest Road 21S03) near Blackrock Mountain; southeast along the Chimney Meadow-Blackrock Station Road through Troy Meadows to the South Fork of the Kern River; south along the South Fork of the Kern River to the Doyle Ranch Road; south along the Doyle Ranch Road to Highway 178 in the town of Onyx; southwest along Highway 178 to Highway 99 at Bakersfield; north along Highway 99 to the point of beginning.
  • ( B ) Season: The season in Zone D-8 shall open on the fourth Saturday in September and extend for 30 consecutive days.

If you are hunting in a area with bear you can have a handgun for personal protection it can also be concealed... Was trying to look up the penal code for you but have to run. when I get back to internet I will post it.

You can carry a handgun concealed during regular deer season but not during archery.

Thanks everyone for the replies, as for the Mammal hunting regulations book, I must have misread it because it doesn't mention 9/9 as the start, it does say that it is the 3rd saturday of September which is what I was hoping for. I'm going to go up to D8 on Thursday, is there any spot anyone can recommend for me to start scouting? I figure I'd look around water sources.

This is what I get when I look up D8
D8 Archery Aug 18-Sep 9, General Sep 22-Oct 21 (4th saturday, 30-day season)

You CANNOT use your crossbow during archery season unless you have a disabled permit. So for you (not having a bow), means YOU can start hunting Sep 22 with either rifle or crossbow. Feel free to go up and scout, just cant shoot a deer til General season opens

I told the sales clerk at big 5 what I planned to be hunting with and she suggested I get D8 but after getting that printout I'm worried she may have given me the wrong place as I don't have a bow, only a crossbow and rifle which is what I was hoping to use.

I live "in an area with bears" and I have never heard of a penal code section that allows me to carry a concealed handgun on account of that. Please post a link.

Only when you are hunting or fishing and not during archery season. It has nothing to do with bears.

There is a California Penal Code law that allows anglers to carry a gun while fishing and while hiking to and from their angling site. California Penal Code, section 12025 prohibits carrying concealed firearms in California, however, section 12027 provides the following exemption to this prohibition: “Licensed hunters or fishermen carrying pistols, revolvers or other firearms capable of being concealed upon the person while engaged in hunting or fishing, or transporting those firearms unloaded when going to or returning from the hunting or fishing expedition.” Remember that some areas that allow fishing, such as state and national parks, and some incorporated areas where fishing is allowed prohibit the possession of any firearm. Make sure to check on the local laws where you plan to fish. The California Bureau of Firearms in the Department of Justice posts a summary of California firearm laws online at http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/.

Licensed hunters or fishermen can carry a concealed gun while engaging in hunting or fishing, or while going to or coming from that hunting or fishing expedition.

You don't need an exception to the loaded gun law when you lawfully hunt, because you are not in a "prohibited area" where it's illegal to shoot a gun, and therefore the loaded gun law doesn't apply. However, you cannot have a loaded gun in or on your vehicle while it's on any public road or highway, even when you're hunting.

It references Penal Code SS 12027(g),

Yes your right it does not say anything about BEARS but here ya go I have talked to fish and game. When you conceal carry in a area with bears you can argue that you have it for personal protection.

I dont see anything that says you cant conceal carry in archery season in SS12027 (g)

If you dont think I am right or just want to know for your self call fish and game and ask for a watch commander and ask him if you can have a handgun for personal protection during archery season

The key to this arguement is personal protection!!

Dont have to look for a penal code or call any watch commander. It is in the F&G code.

§354. Archery Equipment and Crossbow Regulations.

(h) Except as provided in subsection 353(g), archers may not possess a firearm while hunting in the field during any archery season, or while hunting during a general season under the provisions of an archery only tag.
