Spent three days in the Trinity Alps. Packed into Mumford Meadows area. This was my first time in the area and it was kind of a hunting / scouting trip. I saw a bunch of does and 5 bucks. Really only 2 bucks, because 2 were forks and the remaining three were spikes. Only saw one other hunter who said he saw three forks over the weekend. I glassed up high and went up high, however only saw deer in the meadow bottoms. I focused on the meadow bottoms and outlining bedding areas. Just wondering if many of the bigger blacktails were out of these meadows and high up in the rocky stuff. Please let me know if you have better expirences with the bigger blacktails being higher in elevation in the rocky alpine portions of the mountain???? It just seems there is more nutrition in the meadows for horn growth..

I would be happy seeing one buck,
I guess I need to start hunting other zones.

Bucks are up high near the peaks. I went to my normal spot in the Alps for opener last weekend and while I only saw one buck in my normal hunting ground I found 9 others over the mountain all of which were up in the high country (within 500 feet in elevation from the peaks or ridgelines. Most of it is the rocky granite with small patches of timber intermixed., Bucks are there you just gotta find them! Leving at 3:00 PM today to go back and hike in to where I saw all the bucks! Last weekend saw two 4X4's, three 3X3's and the rest were average forks except for one that had huge forks and was about 20" wide.
Good luck!

Yep I was up @ between 6500 and 7400 ft elevation I saw 6 bucks total but only 2 nice ones rest average forks. 1 3x3 about 18" wide and a toad of a 4x5 looked to be nearing 22" wide and every bit as high. Going back Wed-Thur. to see if I can find them again

That explains it. It is hard to pass up that country that hold so much nutrition. Although I glassed that region from the bottoms, you obviosuly have an advantage from the top. Well next time, I am going to have to hoof it further and higher in the woods.

Thanks again !
