...starting on the 12th for 4 solid days of duck, geese, pheasant and rabbits up north of Sacto. My bro-in-law rents a chunk of rice field up there each year and I get a couple free days. Here's me last year:

Woof! The Force was not with us this time out. Combine crystal clear skies, almos zero wind and frozen water (up to .25-inch) and you get... eh, not great bird weather. Geese were the primary targets in our rice field north of Williams, and we ended up getting four Snows and a single Wigeon in our three days. Not great, but we had a fantastic time. I'll be investing in a new shotgun for next year, something in the 3.5-inch class. My old 2.75-inch 870 ain't doing it.

Sorry to hear it wasn't good up north. In the North Grasslands we've been having a lights out shoot on teal with a fair amout of Pintail, Widgeon, Mallard on the straps. 11 shooters yesterday with limits around. Last Sat. was the same for 12 guys. You don.t need a 3 1/2" gun. All I shoot is 2 3/4" shells and have had success for 40+ years. I shot some of those 3 1/2" shells and they kick too much, even the 3" kick alot. If you let them come in and learn what 30-40yds. is the duck is doa and your shoulder will feel better at the end of the day. It's a proven fact that the less recoil the more accurate your shooting will be.

Bzzrd, I'm probably just thinking about the number of high-flying birds I coulda/shoulda got if I'd had another rifle. Under better conditions ? and by that I mean WORSE with rain, clouds and plenty of wind ??I may have done better as the birds would have been in better range. That was the case last year! But as mac said, at least we got a few, and it was a great time.
