Not enough time for a proper forum post but thought I would share with you the results of Saturday's hunt. We came home with 5 cottontails and 3 jackrabbits even though we saw probably more than 3 dozen rabbits total (more jackrabbits than cottontails). Those jackrabbits are super tough! I hit one, saw it roll and it got up and started slowly hopping. I went to finish it off with the .22 pistol but by the time I covered the 20-30 yards it was gone and I spent the next 30 minutes looking for it! Also, we heard Chukar and Quail all day long. I forgot to take a lot of pictures due to the excitement of the day but here are some.

I wasn't sure what was up with this jackrabbit's lungs (the rest of the organs had looked fine) so I tossed it into the bushes

These jackrabbits are like small dogs

Was able to snap a picture of some Chukar

Got stuck in the sand...had to dig out and go rock hunting

Nice! You will have some good eating there. Good to see you had a shovel with you out there. I thought at first you were burying your partner but then I realized someone took the picture. A shovel can get you out and back to civilization. :good:

Good job on the bunnies and having the shovel with you. Except for the stuck vehicle sounds like a fun time.

When we got stuck, we pulled out those orange traction mats but they were useless...so were the OEM floor mats. Anyone know of a good solution to get out of sand (other than 4x4)?

Air down your tires. Amazing difference in sand. The idea is to air down before getting stuck. Bring a cigarette lighter compressor and a sandwich with you. The compressor to refill your tires and the sandwich to eat while you wait for your tires to fill.

And really air them down not just a pound or two. Good point about the sandwich!

As SJ said...you really air them down. You want a nice wide footprint.

When I know I'm going to be spending a lot of time off road I usually air down quite a bit anyway...makes for a nicer drive. Just make sure to re-fill before going highway speeds.

Nice job getting those rabbits. The cottontails look like nice young ones that should taste real good. :)

I know where you were :D . See, and you thought we shot all the rabbits up the other weekend. Did you practice talking to the birds? They weren't in the mood to talk with us :504: . And now you know why I use the .44 and the ,243 for rabbits :smiley-innocent-halo-yellow: . Good job again, you guys did better on the cottontails than we did,

Yeah, next time I tell you not to pull off the road too far out there, don't :rofl2: . There's lots of turnouts along that road. Long strips of old carpet work well too. Next time you see some rolled up near a dumpster take some. Little carpet squares also make handy place to change shoes on in the sand.

Yeah, I didn't know rabbits traveled in herds. I didn't practice talking with the birds because I forgot my call in the car, however they were chattering it up all day long. I could have used your rangefinder for the jacks that would hop out of range and chill in the shade. Though we did get to shoot at quite a bit with the .22. As for the next time...I'm taking your truck :D. The next time I see someone tossing carpet or rugs I'll have to snag me some. I still owe you a bottle of whiskey so tell me what you like.

That orange vest will give you away 200 yards out, but I guess these bunnies were not watching. Good job on the bunnies and get youself out of trouble.

Now there ya go, a man with a plan  . Looks like August has slowed a little for us so we could probably try and squeeze in another trip before dove opener if you want? I know a 12 year old that reminds me every day how much he wants to go back out :D . And I've seen your pack, how can you have 100 lbs of crap in there with no calls?! :roflmao3[1]:

The jackrabbits didn't really seem to care about the color and I nearly always wear the orange vest to make sure other hunters know I am not prey.

Take a high lift jack http://www.hi-lift.c...acks/index.html
A friend showed me a long time ago and I was stunned on how easy to get my big truck then a GMC 72 PU 4 wheel un stuck
Rear end buried put the point of the jack in the hitch hole jack up till the tires are above the ground then push the side of the vehicle like you would to tip over a cow now you are on solid ground pick up jack and your on your way

Nice job on the rabbits

The knife on your belt fish and game may get nervous asking for your papers

Wow, that area is beautiful, I'm sure many don't like to give away there spots but is there any way someone can recommend a similar style area? I'd love to go if only to go site seeing. One of the best parts of going to Las Vegas for me was the stops in between and going out to the desert spots just to walk around and see the wildlife

Looked like a good time. Good shooting :good:
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.
