Took the bow for a walk this morning. Took a shot at a fussy went to get the arrow and ran into this happy guy.

a bit later found this guy.

Found this guy trying to fly.

Mom and dad was a little mad .

That one sure does have a real greenish tint to it, or is that just the picture? I ask because I have only seen one other that was that green. It is funny how some can be almost rust colored and others green.

I don't like snakes unless I know they are non-poisonous and non-aggressive. If I see what is rattling, I pull the trigger and turn off the fuse box of the culprit. Yuck on the the snakes for sure. I like my snakes dead, skinned and fried!

Stick Benders snake looks like a gopher snake. Big Shooters image is a Mojave Green, that is one dangerous viper. I'd like to try one skinned and fried too!

No...that is a headless model.

Shoot it I did not kill the rattler just took its head off with a broad head and took the rattles . It was still alive when I left it. I do not do snake very well. I put the rattles in my pocket and the next thing I know I was on my knees with the world closing in on me. Got up took some big breaths and up chucked. I hate snakes.

I could not tell if the head was off.Thumper like's to let rattle snakes go so that's why I asked.You must have been in that peach orchard next to the hills .

I guess you really don't do snakes very well . When I got my first one in my teens, nobody told me that they still crawl around for hours after they are dead. I carried that thing back to camp for a half hour wondering if it was ever going to quit moving! My dad's friends were very disappointed, I did not know at the time, but they made me walk back so they could hide and hopefully watch me jump and run when it started moving on me while I held it. It still doesn't bother me, but sure intrigues me. Especially how they will still strike at you with the bloody stump that used to be their head

I guess the thing to do with them would be to get them on ice as soon as possible to "chill out" the nerves and get it to stop moving. I've seen video of people doing snake on the grill and it is still moving all over the place. That's what I call "Field Fresh Food"!

Something I just learned - you need a fishing license to take reptiles (or amphibians). Just an FYI. and obvioulsy self defense doesn't require it!

Saw a rattler Friday exploring Mount Diablo with my oldest. She saw it fiirst - I totally missed it. A young little one perched in a couple of those huge pine cones someone had set up on a stump. I had almost walked over and kicked them over but got distracted. Sometimes ADD helps! She was walking over and stopped and "Look - a snake!" very calmly so I went over and looked , and sure enough. good thing she is an eagle eye!

I don't think so................................Don't need it at all, self defense or not, for rattlers

The limit for each of the species listed below is two, unless otherwise provided. Limit, as used in this section, means daily bag and possession limit. No reptiles shall be taken from ecological reserves designated by the commission in Section 630 or from state parks, or national parks or monuments.
(b No sportfishing license is required for the sport take of any rattlesnake.

The law dosen't mean much to me when it comes to Mountain lions, and Rattle snakes.
If either one wants to bite me, they will be history.

Okay - MOST reptiles!

And self defense is always an okay excuse. Bears and even deer and elk sometimes attack. don't think anyone would fault you for protecting yourself from anything wanting to take a bite out of you, but deer and such might be harder to prove they were threatening.

Honest warden, you didn't see the look in the eyes of that cotton tail! He was out for blood!

I just happen to know it because we used to, and occasionally still do, hunt rattle snakes for hat bands.
As kids we would hunt at night for the "Communist Ground Squirrels" . You wouldn't believe how viscous those things can get in the desert at night

Been seeing lots of snakes and lizards this year. We live next to a park. Also, the house backs up to open park land...needless to say, we get all kinds of visitors. Real common for me to catch gopher snakes and move rattlers. Also see a lot of alligator lizards.

The other evening heard the dogs barking, went and checked it out and they had this guy cornered. Haven't caught one in a few years...about a 3ft'r. I was holding on to him but had to put my foot on him so he'd hold still for a picture. I let him go up in the hills behind the house

Also about a week ago found this little guy on the driveway. It's just a common skink but when they are small/juvenile they have a bright blue tail. These tails come off so easy...on purpose. I guess it's a defense mechanism because it pops off and starts wiggling around while the skink makes it's get away. When I was a kid we'd catch these things and it was a real prize to get one intact. I was surprised this on didn't pop off it's tail on me.

Don't mind the common skinks, but those damn common skanks really get to me.

Those King snakes are great to keep around as long as the dogs do not bother them. You will find fewer of the rattlers. A note about your post, fishing license for reptiles. That Reg is in reguards to the capture and keeping of Live Rattlesnakes. You may keep 2 live Rattlesnakes if you have a valid fishing license. I have known a couple of people that keep them in aquariums (don't know why). I would agree more with Bisley. Use them for hat bands.

How do you hunt ground squirrels at knight ?

You got me thinking, You're right, I do believe it was kangaroo rats, not ground squirrels, my bad. It was like 25-30 years ago, and about 10,000 gallons of whiskey killing the brain cells ago . And we used flashlights and shotguns . It was in the early to mid 80's, so we were the only ones in that canyon. I miss those days
