Mountain lions have been in my part of the valley for years. I can remember one near Sacramento State College in 1994.

Yea Johnny we've seen sign at our duck club which is only 10 or so miles south of China Island. I know that the Newman duck club which is just to the south has seen sign there also. They seem to follow the creek and river channels down into the valley looking for dinner.

About 7 yrs ago I was talking to a federal trapper. He traps coyotes in Butte, Sutter and Yuba counties. He said he got a call one morning. there was a cat in a dumpster in the back of Walmart in Oroville. He responded and shot it, lol he said if they had called Cal Fish and Game they would have tried to relocate it. He relocated it lol. Cats have been in the valley for years, but there are more of them now. ED

Dale is this something new since they banned hunting them in 91 or have they always been down this low.I am really surprised one is here in the grass lands it is going to wipe out all the deer the dfg planted a few years ago. This is the first time I ever heard of one being in this area.
I hunt the stevinson corp land and it's north of the San Joaquin river on the other side of china Island I hope i don't call that sucker in.I would always say I was not in lion habitat so I never worried about it tell now lol.

Two years ago my wife saw a small lion (60-70 lbs) run across the river road, past the sale yard, and just before the race track. It was coming out of hat little strip of china island that buts up to river road near Newman. I called the game warden, he obviously didn't believe me and said it was probably a house cat. I wasn't asking him to do anything, just wanted to let him know. We get pictures of lions on our game cameras almost every week so my wife sees what the local lions look like, from 8' 200 lb toms to 18" cubs with spots still on them, to the juvionals that are on their own for the first time. We see them all, about 15 miles west of china island.

To get back to your first question, hunting china island is one of my favorite places to hunt ducks. You have to be fast, and know where your going. I don't waste any time worrying about lions though, I figure if they can sneak up on a deer, me and my senses don't stand a chance.

Toxic I know that area you are talking about I only live a few miles from there across the merced bridge. That archery club next to the San Joaquin river has seen lion tracks and they have deer there to .
The ones you seen on your game cam are they west of I-5 in the hills ?
They banned lion hunting and now they are moving down into the valley isn't this great.
.........
About a month ago one of our irrigaters at 2 am in the morning saw a strange animal crouched next to a barb wire fence he said it was grey color and had a big head it then jumped over the fence cleared it and had a long tail.He kept telling me it looked like a monkey but i told him unless someone had a monkey as a pet and got away then it was probably a lion.

Yep, there are weeks we get more pictures of lions than deer. I have one really cool picture that shows 3 lions drinking out of a water trough, with the lights of Turlock/Modesto in the background. If I could only learn how to post pictures...

Most people don't even know that little strip is even part of china.
