If you are going to Turner's to get your license and put in for the tag drawings just take the worksheet with you.I just threw my worksheet in the garbage, my choices were easy to remember.

In the late 80's my dad and his hunting partner scored tags for X9b. I don't know if this had anything to do with it or not, but on the three application choices he put down: 1st-G3, 2nd-X9b, and 3rd-Poach!!! :ph34r:I can remember seeing it on there and never expecting him to send it in. He did. As you can see, the insanity is hereditary in our family. He was so tired of never drawing that he had reached his limit and didn't care anymore. Well, they were actually drawn, and not taken away and locked up instead, thank God. I can't help but think that someone in the DFG office had a sense of humor and is the only reason he was drawn. Only explanation I can think of. You could try it again today (AT YOUR OWN RISK) but they would probably take your license and guns now. A crying shame, those really were the good days :)

Too funy, Bob... With my luck, I would likely be arrested If I tried that. LOL Anyway, although possibly helpful, you do not "need" to have the work sheet to apply for the drawings. Also, if there is a DFG office semi close to your home, I would go there before ANY Turners. There is an office semi close to my house and is the ONLY place I will go to for license, tags, stamps etc.Good Luck

Thanks for the reply guys. I think ill just fill it out and take it to turners since its right down the street from me. It might make things easier for them by taking the sheet.

:good: There used to be one off the 71 near you out there by the 3D archery range, but I do believe it has closed since I no longer see it listed.

You must have my luck :rofl2: . The other funny part about that story is that they both took deer, my dad's was a little 3x3 and his partner's was a very nice 4x4 that was well over 200lbs., but we got more meat out of the little one. It seems his hunting partner had a severe case of buck fever, and that is not a good thing to have with an old Winchester 71 .348!!! It was something like a total of 5 or 6 rounds from the .348 in the end, and another 2 or 3 from the .357 as he walked up to it. He must have been REALLY tired of chasing it :D . Pop's was a one shot from the .30-06 with the old original Winchester Silvertips in a handload. Those bullets were pure dynamite on everything he used them for, from pigs to deer. Somebody I know still has a hundred or two of those old, obsolete, unfindable bullets :)

Yeah it was a couple blocks away from me. Wish it was still there.

Yes, in Los Alamitos... and yes, a very good idea taking a work sheet if going to Turners. IF you can find someone that can r e a d that is. <_< Pictures might be even better.Bob, that (200 lbs) is a HUGE deer... in ANY state! Actually, one of the biggest (body'd) deer I saw was from Calif hanging in someone else's camp. Of course seen other huge ones in other states, but this Ca buck was as big as any.

his hunting partner had a severe case of buck fever, and that is not a good thing to have with an old Winchester 71 .348!!!

He obviously could have used my (speed addict) help on his handloads. :rofl2: And pretty cool on those Silvertips! :good:

I hear ya, me too. The one is Los Al isn't too bad or too far, it was just a heck of a lot easier for me to shoot up the 71 than to mess with the other freeways around here :504: . When did they close it? That must have been super convenient for you. It has been like 10 years since I was there. Went there to try (emphasis on try) to get some info on the "exact boundaries of the forest" for hunting dove up off Day Creek Ave and the 210 by the water towers since home owners were having a fit even though we were legal. Imagine that <_< . Of course now it is a "recreational trail" even though it is LANF, and despite the fact we grew up hunting there :good: .

He obviously could have used my (speed addict) help on his handloads. :rofl2:

I don't think I have ever heard the word "speed" and ".348" used in the same sentence Frank  . Making you use a .348 would be about the equivalent to making me use nothing but B....S bullets!!!And yes, he was a monster. Not the largest rack by any means, but a very full-bodied buck for sure. I need to see if I can find the old photos. My brother mentioned something about a family member scanning all the old pics. He absolutely dwarfed the 3x3. He came right out where we bird hunt up there in Inyo, just a farther up the road into the canyons ;) . Of course that was back when mountain lions were hunted and under control :1019:

Why not?? I put in for the drawing zones there every year, even under their new system. Am I missing something... again??

Taking a wild guess here, but since his zone became a drawing zone, that probably means he was able to get Over The Counter tags before which could only be done at the DFG Office. So now there is no need to have to go to a DFG Office since it can all be done closer to home instead of fighting the 91 or 405 traffic, unlike the OTC tags <_< . Right?

Oh, ok, makes sense, & Thanks... I never buy the over counter tags, so why I didn't think of that. Then again, I probably wouldn't have thought of it anyway (if I had bought them). <_< LOL

Yes Bisley is right. I use to get my tag over the counter so its pointless driving an hour there and an hour back for nothing. You dont have to go to a dfg office to get a over the counter tag anymore either because they can print them out at most license dealers.

Why not enter the drawing and put down a GREAT PREMIUM tag as your first choice and put the over the counter tag as your second choice? You could luck out and get a random draw tag on your first choice. If nothing else you will earn a preference point and get your over the counter tag. There are some great hunts in California and it doesn't cost you any more money to try and get them through the drawing.

Absolutely. One should always put n for the G-3 hunt: Inyo County late season hunt in December ;) . By that time of year the snow has driven them down so far that even a blind man could take a usually large buck out of there. It is basically an X9-b tag with the advantage of the snow driving them down in the late season. Just a thought.

I use to get my tag over the counter so its pointless driving an hour there and an hour back for nothing. You dont have to go to a dfg office to get a over the counter tag anymore either because they can print them out at most license dealers.

Shows how long its been since I've been out. See, you learn something new every day.

I only knew it because pops and I used to give LANF a half-hearted effort each year (more so just an excuse to get out for a few weeks) until we got tired of the crowds and insanity that it has turned into. Believe me, you didn't miss much on the OTC tags  .

Yea when i was up in northern california for my deer hunt i came back to the stockton area where my cusins live and they told me if i wanted to go to the area they know. So we went to a sporting goods store and i bought a second deer tag. I just gave the guy my license and he asked me what area i wanted. I told him and he printed the tag out right then and there.

You and your family can go together on a premium deer hunt even if just one of you get drawn. There are some hunts in California that are great hunts in December. If you did luck out and got drawn there are lots of people that will give you advice on where to hunt.

Last year I went along with two of my friends and I didn't have a tag but I had a great time just being there.

Check out these pictures, links and video. Going hunting in a new spot that has bucks everywhere isn't a bad thing.

Check out Robin's buck in the above link.

The lady that is in the first link "Robin" took this video during the season last year.

Here are some pictures of December hunts in California.

See what happens when you put in for special hunts (like you were encouraged to do) :D . That's what happens when the snow drives them down. Like I said, pops and his buddy pulled monsters out of G3. And I won't rub it in too much about another friend of the family who was lucky enough to draw a Tule Elk tag in the Owens Valley  .

Do it, you literally have nothing to lose, only something to possibly gain.
