The wife is heading out of town for the weekend, so I took the day off to get the kids from school. That's not till 3:30 so.... I couldn't pass on a morning hunt at the ranch! Got out there around 5:30 and made my way to my first spot. The wind was blowing maybe 10mph, I called for 15 mins and nothing, I haven't heard any howling either so I get up and go. Second, third and fourth stands the same thing... Blanks. Oh well, I gave it a shot I tell myself. So I head back to the car. I cross a fence and figure heck, one more stand. I set up against the post, with the caller 30 paces down the fence line on another post. I start calling and in 15 seconds a pair hop up to my left inside 50 yards and run away... Damn! I hit pup dis 3 for 1 minute and waited. My heart is pounding! A minute later I see them bounding through the grass up the side of the second draw over. They slowed to a walk. The closest coyote stopped and gave me a nice broadside at 275ish. Still catching my breath, I let one fly.... Poof! A big blast of dirt just in front of em... That coyote hit the afterburners and back down the ravine it went... Wind maybe? Nah... I flat out missed. Disappointed but.... I still got to go out so no complaints! I'll get em next time! Carlos

Still sounds like a good time. :good:
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

At least you called something in and 275 yard shot is not that easy .I miss ones closer than that.I don't know why people have stopped hunting them I saw 3 young coyotes out on their own this afternoon in an oat field I was working.

Well...I kind of sort of have stopped hunting them because it's getting HOT out in the desert! Been doing a lot more fishing these days.Anyhow...those misses sure do hurt....but like someone said, I miss shots a lot closer than 275 yards, so I wouldn't feel too bad. A few weeks ago, a friend missed a kill shot at about 5 yards (he grazed it- maybe would have eventually died, but not for a while)....I dispatched it when it ran about 100 yards with a running head shot....yeah, I got lucky.
